Are you OK in Iceland? I see there is a huge volcano eruption, so bad the ash has shut down Heathrow, London airport.
Hoping you are all right.

Hi and thanks for the comcern :) -
Most of the problems have been in the Southern part of Iceland in one of our main Farming area. Due to this eruption being under a glacier, a fair amount of flooding has occured, destroying some roads and pastures, but so far no buildings. Humans and animals have thankfully not been hurt. Due to the huge amount of ashes from the volcano air traffic in Scandinavia and Northern Europe have been stopped but hopefully not for too long.
This eruption is the second one in 2 months - the first one started in Fimmvörðuháls, between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull in march (that one was just a great tourist attraction :) ) and only about 24 hours after that volcano stopped the volcano activities started in Eyjafjallajökull and is supposedly at least 10 times as big as the first eruption. Our main concern is that the most dangerous volcano in Iceland is Katla in Mýrdalsjökull (another galcier) and if that one erupts we will definetely have more problems.

Here are some fantastic photos taken of the first eruption, by a german photographer who has a fascination for volcanic eruption: http://www.mrietze.com/iceland10.htm

And if you want to learn a bit more about the current acitivities:

Due to our Icelanic spring weather (rain, wind and poor visibility :) ) photos and videos are not available of the action but as soon as the skies clear one of the webcams might come in handy:

Icelanders are used to the constant activities of Mother Nature and we just continue with our daily activities and hope for the best and that this one will be just another tourist attraction :).

WOoo hoo..Brainwashed by Newfs! One of the few who seem to have a solid understanding of what ..living-With..the geographic and..geological timeframes of this earth..means. You will already know we have our ashes scattered..within the larger family tree (given my writings upon stuff on NN)..so..seeing your comment as to the economy there..am in a quite glorious state of stem-ending giggles..right now!! ;) Iceland is strong..and everything you, as a country have done..from the first ..'footfalls'..upon your coast lines..will act to help Iceland of today..rise again..and lead for the tomorrows coming. You..are realists. I do not think the global population..has any real fix..'yet'..as to how this is going to play out..over time..and the length of ash..from this and newer sources..as this ..goes forward. It took the news and media forever..back in the 80s when we had Mt. Saint Helens blow here..to even ..bring themselves to say there would be Any..health hazard..as to the ash. The northwest coast was pretty much in tourist mode..although..we all understood the number of those killed by the initial blast and superheated storms/lahars. Thank you much for news/ the photos..and now..stomp outside and ..Sing..toward the fires..as your kin have done..for ever so long! :) ina n HB n Kesa

Ina you are absolutely right we will survive this and the good thing is that the eruption gives us a break from the economical disaster .
We prone to be carefree rather than worrying and as long as no lifes are lost we can not complain.

And here is a radarimage of the culprit (well there are at least 3 craters) - they call this photo "The face of evil in the volcano" :

That's alright..... enjoyed the quiet air space today

The visibility in the eruption area has been really bad so the actual eruption has not been seen yet, exept for the radar images, only the column of smoke has been visible in the area. Not sure if I'll be able to see the column from Reykjavík (approx. 150 km away from Eyjafjallajökull) but I'll be on the look-out for it. Hopefully everyone in the surrounding are will be safe, both humans and animals.
