Sorry, long post again.....

I think I've talked before about Zeke and possible anxiety issues, well I think he has LP. No confirmation and I probably won't go with getting confirmation. I think we'd have a major issue getting him in a car and to a vet and I'm positive I don't want to put him under unless it's life or death.

We had an episode a few weeks back and thank god that I have the vets cell, we woke up to him panicked and his breathing was scary. The vet had given us Zanax a few months earlier (I looked and that was back in Oct/2017) and I am ever so glad he did. We only used it once before and it completely zonked him, and it did again that day and I think he needed it cause I'm not sure how long he was in a panic. He slept it off and we haven't had an issue like that again but his breathing is concerning.

He's been having such a hard time with the 3 steps we have, so Vin and I decided to start to force the issue. He now wears the harness and we force him to use the ramp we made for him a few years back (which was a godsend for Myra) it's been about a week and he panics easily but hopefully with time that changes. He's still strong and as stubborn as anything cause he's taken both Vin and I down.

I think we have decided to choose a medication called Doxepin. Red Bank Vet Hospital is currently doing a study on Doxepin and the effects on LP in Labrador's. My vet is open to our thoughts and is willing to give this a shot. I had him out to the house about a week ago cause I've been fighting with a nasty elbow hygroma that I can't seem to heal on Zeks's elbow. I was kinda hoping for a lesson in wrapping elbows but he was concerned with it being mast cell. So he took a biop and sent to the lab for confirmation. Scared me some, but I haven't heard about many newfs with that so I didn't go over board, results today say no mast cell, can I say Waaaaaa Whooooo. Ok, maybe I was scared a lot, just seems like lately **** keeps rolling down hill and I'm at the bottom trying to work my way up, so at least I got a step up on that one.

Just looking to see if anyone has tried the medication Doxepin and looking to hear any results if so??? My understanding is if it is LP and it's both sides, chances are the medication will not work but if it's only one side, we have a good chance. I currently have RVCP (right vocal cord paralysis) from a stupid virus a few years back, so I get what Zeke is going through and I just want it better for him. Zeke does have some rear end weakness but nothing major yet. Any and all thoughts are ready to be heard cause I can't loose him so close to Myra, it would kill me.

Sorry to hear that Zeke is having some problems. Sarah (blk lab) is showing signs of LP as well, with her voice and rear end weakness. Tootsie (puppymill survivor) had LP from her vocal cords being cut. Back then they didn't do much but surgery, I don't recall medicine back then.

I am of no help with the meds you are considering I just wanted to pass along my good thoughts for Zeke.

I did have experience with LP and the associated back weakness with Sophie my Lab. I chose not to do the tyeback surgery as the LP wasn't as bad as the back weakness. I don't know about the med but am sending good thoughts as you need them right now, hugs.

Thanks guys, I really need all the help and lifting up I can get these days. We started the meds last night. Still trying to find anyone who has used it for a Newf. (looking for dosages) I've posted on 2 FB groups but have no response. I'm in a LP group on FB and I've been learning, that's where I heard of the drug and discussed with our vet. What we started a week ago was 1/4 of the Zanax in the morning and a 1/4 at night which has taken the edge off and has made doing the ramp a tad easier but now we are stopping the Zanax and this morning was a bit of a fight, so I'll discuss with vet tomorrow about maybe keeping that 1/4 until the drug kicks in, if it works. They say it takes about 2/3 weeks to build up in their system. We've started dosages at what the study for Labs is, 100mg 2x daily. I'll keep you guys all posted on things! Again keep us in your prayers and thoughts

Noticeable difference, and we are not even a full week into yet. He took a nap under the kitchen table last night, he hasn’t done that in months.

Ok, I figured since I really don't see anything on Doxepin in this forum I figured I'd put my 2 cents out there. Can you say MIRACLE!!!!! I have my Zeke back!!!! It's only been a week but I'll take this miracle and let the world fall down around me (and it is) I needed this, so much. I'm not saying it's a miracle drug for everyone, my understanding is that it's work for dogs about 50% but for me right now, this is the best thing ever. So far no side effects and the difference is amazing. I'll take this time and enjoy every second of it, not sure how long it will last but I'll keep you posted here & there on how things are going. So do your research and investigating, it's worth the try for any pup with LP, just wish with the anxiety issues I would have started to look at LP earlier, I kept thinking shooting pain at the way he did things. He's also going up the ramp by himself!!!!! I am so blessed right now, thank the Lord he's given me a little light and right now I'm gonna let it shine!!!!!

P.S. Dosage we started with was wrong on the other post I made, we are currently taking 50mg am and 50mg pm, the Red Bank Hosiptal study is doing 100mg 2x's a day, so our dosage is actually lower and working! Oh and thank you guys for your thoughts, prayers & well wishes cause I know they have helped!!!!
