Your Newfoundland Is Very Small!

This is what I keep hearing about my girl Mousse.

I was at the vet recently and that's what the tech said. "I've never seen such a small Newfoundland".

Mousse is 1 year 7 months, nearly 27? inches at her shoulders, thick boned, huge back end (she's growing and that was the most recently thing to get bigger, she seems like she's still growing by the day) but weighs a mere 78 lbs.

I told the tech that it will take another year or so for her to fill out and that I thought for sure she'd be well over 100 lbs, but she kinda looked at me like I was nuts and my dog was "eh".

Kinda hurt my feelings a tad.

I think Mousse is a beautiful girl and will look amazing when she fills out, but looks pretty now. Her rear feathers look kinda sad because I trimmed them but otherwise..... She's pretty huge to me.
She can put her paws on my shoulders and stand taller than me no problems (5ft 4).

Is it just me?

remind your vet techs that newfs may keep growing until they are 3 - 4 years old...particularly filling out.

She's a beautiful girl and who gives a rat's ass what anyone else thinks. She's your's and you love her and she loves you. Nothing else counts. Period.

PS. Boy are they going to be surprised in another two or three years. BWAhaaahaa

Loki just got back from a very successful vet checkup (despite the fact that we're 99% sure he has a tiny flea problem :( ) and they noted that, at 95 lbs, he is small for the breed. They gushed about how much better that is for his overall health, though, and how much less complicated things will be in the future. (Also they couldn't keep their hands off the little bugger!)

So even if she is small, who cares? Tom Cruise is barely over 5 feet, and that guy makes money hand over fist!

78 pounds does seem small for a Newf that is almost 2 years old, but like everyone says, who cares!! She is gorgeous!!! And healthy!! And you love her dearly!! That's all that matters! People can be so insensitive when talking about our pets.

size is relative, some are small some are big.

My last boy was 96 kgs and larger than Max is who only weighs 65kgs and is at least 8" smaller.

So long as they are healthy and happy- who cares, your girl is lovely as she is

Who cares? She's beautiful and you're happy!

I've gotten some comments from people too about Bri's size, at 2 years 2 months she's about 95lbs, 25in at the shoulder. Not worth worrying about since all the folks who've said something to me have never had a Newfie in the first place. :)

She is kind of leggy and I think she will fill out more. It will happen naturally.
Don't get hung up on the weight issue. Keeping her a healthy weight is more important.
I love the pic of her play bowing...She looks like a happy girl.

My Hannah is eight (!) years old and only weighed 64 lb at her last vet visit. She is a mini newf. She's lovely though and well proportioned. And she comes from excellent bloodlines. Believe me I get lots of rude comments about her. She also gets lots of compliments on how lovely she is.

Who cares, they always say my guy is small, he is 28" at the shoulders at that is the norm, but as long as they are healthy. My last guy was taller, about 31", but not nearly as agile as Tiki. She will fill out.

I would like to show her in the future, if she matures well. Mostly for fun. Not sure how she'd do.
But I just figured, since she's "breed standard height" +, she has to fill out. Unless she's just going to be tall and lanky lol

Either way, we definitely love her :)

nowhavethreebears, I totally know what you mean!! Idk, I think I'd prefer a 65 lb well proportioned and nicely typed Newfie girl than a 150 lb newf that isn't well balanced or proportioned.

I suppose that's why in the standard they state "larger size is desirable never at the expense of balance, structure, and correct gait." :)

And dogs have an average breed standard height of 28! They are crazy- newfy! :) I'm sure your guy is gorgeous!

We get lots of comments too. Our Ziva is 14 months old, weighs 93 lbs. I am not sure whether or not I measured her correctly. But I think she was close to 23' which is shorter than standard. I tell people when they ask what she is that "She's a Newfoundland - girls are smaller and she's a small girl". Funny small @ 93 lbs. People just expect all Newfs to be huge

It used to bother me always having to tell them "No, she's not a fat, furry Lab!", but I'm used to it now. We have a Lab too and he's right there next to her every time they ask about her. They only comment on her

I get the same comments about Maggie. And I really don't care. When I bring her to newf club events she fits right in with the crowd. She's not tall, but she's pretty broad chested and wide (not with fat) so I think it makes her look a little/fat. Whatever. I don't know where she came from and I don't care. I love her and thats all that matters.

Maybe your girl is just a late bloomer. I bet she'll fill out quite a bit, but maybe she'll always be on the small side. Who cares?

Perfectly said!! I remember how surprised I was to see Merlin still filling out close to 5 years old.

Who cares how big your beautiful girl is.. cause she is.. well beautiful.... My Murphy was way too tall and I feel in my heart that it contributed to his many health issues.. So.. tell everyone who says she is small to "bite me"... :icon_bb:

I think Mousse is a very pretty girl, and she looks happy and playful. My Abbey is now 2 1/2 years old and just this summer she tipped the scale at 105 lbs, and I think only because she was spayed this year, she had been around 90 lbs. Each dog fills out differently. This weekend at the vets office another client there said she didn't know Newfies we so big.

She's gorgeous, there is plenty of time to fill out! I get the opposite with bernie, when they ask how old he is and I answer he's so many weeks, there eyes pop out of there heads and say " he's going to be big" maybe it becouse there isn't many Newfies around here or many people don't know how big they are but I want to say " yes they are big dogs"

Do NOT let it bother you. But, get used to it. We had a run in with a vet tech at the dog park who felt the need to repeat, "You're the smallest Newf EVER!" a bazillion times. Because ALL the Newfs she saw were SO much bigger.

I informed her of what standard was for females, and that my Maggie was 28" and 130 lbs and that she was probably seeing a lot of males and dogs bred specifically for people who just wanted "big" and not healthy.

Don't take it personally.

My last black girl was from well bred show stock with all the tests, etc., and somehow ended up leggy and tall with juvenile cataracts and weak wrists - 31". See avatar. She was also total Newf when it came to all the good traits, was a natural (not trained) water rescue dog. "Saved" many people from our swimming pool, which she loved. Lived to be 13 and I miss her every day. So, who cares. Nobody here does.
