Hi, to be sure about the positionning, ask you'r vet to send the X-ray to the OFA for a preliminary report, if the positionning is wrong they will send back a letter, (I don't remeber if they send back X-Ray)telling the positionning was wrong, and to submit another X-Ray. Go to the OFA web page and look at the FAQ link, it's very interesting

Hi, My 16 month old Belle was examined by an orthopedic vet and i was told she needed TPLO surgery immediately, she wasn't limping had no trouble walking playing, her only problem was she dragged her butt before she would get up.
I decided to take her to a chiropractor, we have only been there 2 times but she told me that this dog did not need any surgery, alot of vets will tell you that just for the money, thats what i think anyway, I would not have any surgery on my newf until i got several opinions, and tried out some other things first. You never get a gaurantee with surgery ,it could turn out worse than what you started with.
I would dump that vet and give him a piece of my mind.

Good Luck

6 month old Hip trouble

Hello all. My 6 month old has been limping so we had xrays taken. Vet said they looked suspicious but not too worry yet. Well of course the first thing I started to do was worry. She said the necessary portion of his femur is only half way into the socket as opposed to the normal 2/3 and still may fix itself. Anyone have a similar experience? Should I start giving him supplements? Or do we just have to wait it out and have him rechecked in a few months?

A six month old is still growing. There's laxity in the joints...and that's very normal. It sounds like you have a good, sensible Vet.

Yes...definitely supplement. We use Cosamin DS, Vit E, Ester C and Salmon Oil. The Salmon Oil doesn't do anything at all for the hips....but it's good for him.

Best of luck!!

The dog does seem slightly rotated in the picture...............And a good x-ray should not have this, And yes it is difficult to do this on any large breed of dog. I am a Radiology nurse and have been for over twenty years. And I have ofcourse a great interest in Newf hips. The sockets however even with the slight rotation, do not seem smooth or as "deep" as you would expect. But in the same breath I will state that a good diagnotic x-ray is important, especially if considering such huge surgery.
Lameness can also be caused by tendons. In Australia some of the large vet practises have been using MRI's.( my husband has been helping with installing some of these at several vet practises) They are exellent for showing joint, tendon, capsule and softer stuctures. There is also the cat scanner of course, which can show the bone structure very accurately and even do some beaut restructures on it's computer to really show everything.
My dog (Abbey)was also diagnosed by a vet with hip dyplasia. I took the x-rays in to one of our Radiologists and he pointed out to me that her problem was arthritis and her hip sockets were "rough", but she did not have hipdyplasia. We went to a University vet practise she was put on both alternative and normal medication and did really well. She died of a heart attack at 10
So please take extreme care before you make any big descisions. And do go to someone who has experience with big dogs and dog orthopedics. Really hoping all goes well.

I would like to thank all of you Newf Nuts who contribute to this thread. Bonnie, my 2 YO F was 'diagnosed' with displaysia on Tuesday. After looking at the XRays a second time (local vet Not OFA certified) my wife and I are not near as alarmed and much better prepared to keep Bonnie doofus playful days last as long as possible.

Gold bead Implantation

Hi All,

I just wanted to shear the below link. It's regarding gold bead implantation for dogs with Hip Dysplasia, Arthritis, and/or Epilepsy/ Seizure Disorders.

The best advice I could give to any pet owner would be to be proactive in your furbaby's health care. Your vet is human and does not know it all. Do some research (Newf net is a great place for it)

:yinyang:

I hope this helps!

Again- DNA blood samples are also critical!!!!!!!!! Every dog with dysplasia, as well as every littermates, sires, dams, cousins, aunts, uncles...... EVERY dog can help find answers someday via research. And just as important - dogs that are clear from dysplasia. Bottom line.... we need every single dog!!!!!!!

Also - whenever you have xrays taken, please always submit them to OFA. This increases the database that goes along with the DNA being stored..... and its a bargain (3 radiologists look at your xrays for $35....... thats a deal!) But most important, we have the xrays in the database to be connected to the family members which are also connected to the health surveys and DNA blood samples.... the more complete picture we can offer to researchers, the more likely we will be the breed always selected for the best research projects.

Amy,
I am not an expert on xrays or Newfs, but can share my experience. My 9 year old has had severe problems with his back legs for a few years now. Bad arthritis coupled with mulitple seizures and a mini-stroke when we went on vacation last year. (apparently he also has separation anxiety) We tried the Rimadyl, but it gave him a bleeding ulcer so we stopped. He is now on monthly adequan injections which definitely seem to help. However, best thing we did was put a "doggie elevator" in the garage so he no longer has to go up and down steps to go outside. I did not think he was going to make it thru the summer in 2009 but the elevator has really made a difference.
Good luck!
