This week my babysitter gave me an interesting Moya story...She was gated into the kitchen while the babysitter went to do something in another room. When she returned, she found Moya laying across the kitchen table. She had used the chair as a stepstool! Anyway, that's not why I'm posting...

What do you all do about the Newfie pawing thing?

Do you mean pawing humans and non-human household items?? My 15 3/4 week old Elle stands on her two back paws, leans the left front paw on the counter and uses her right paw to open drawers, dresser ones and kitchen counter ones alike!!!!! I think she has been watching every move we make to learn how to do that one. Plus, she swats at us when she is ticked off or wants us to stop whatever we are doing to her as if she were a cat. (the cats have taught her that one) Oh, and now the cats will wrestle with her and even allow her to put them in her mouth! SCARY, in my opinion, but they don't seem to be bothered by it and when they tire of it they let her know!!

So, nutzycat, what do you mean by pawing!!
Hugs,

She does use her paws to get at things on the table, etc but I meant pawing people. I don't want her to use her paws when playing with the kids (or me, really).

I know what you mean. It is a major issue with us too. I am having to keep her on leash in the house when she isn't in her crate as she has become very rambunctious and doesn't listen. Nothing seems to work, but controlling her with a leash lately. I don't know what has gotten into her. I don't want her to paw us either or my son. She jumped my ds the other day and scratched him badly on his shoulder. So, no matter how much we love her, she is in trouble. So, she has sto be on leash now in the house with us. :(
I'd love to hear what others approaches are. I have read the archives...and am trying everything!

This is just starting for us so the responses will be good for us too! Thus far we refuse to give him attention and in fact we turn our backs and go away. He does the strangest things with his front paws. It reminds us of a baby bear. He holds his toys while he's on his back, or leans up on his toy box and swats the toys out with his paws, not his mouth. Don't know what's up with that! Very cute though. Not cute when we're the one's that are being swatted.

RobinandRobin, and Nutzycat,
How old are your pups?? Elle will be 17 weeks on Monday the 9th of Sept. (Her bday was May 14th). I am just curious to compare developmental stages. I sure hope she gets over the mouthiness and the pawing and swatting of us...hope it eventually "sinks" in that it isn't acceptable.

Sailor's Birthday is also on May 12th!!

In regards to the pawing issue, I would just CONSISTANTLY grab their paw, and say in a firm loud voice "OFF!!!" and put it down on the ground.... each and every time they do this.

I do know a couple of people, who used their dogs pawing to teach them how do do the high 5! An interesting diversion!

I guess I'd still discourage the pawing though, and teach them the trick later.
