I picked up Winterdance by Gary Paulson again the other day and I'm still laughing out loud at some of the scenes, as he describes trying to teach himself how to race sled dogs, without any experience. It's not Newf-related, but it's a great dog book too. The movie Snow Dogs was very loosely inspired by this, (mainly the funny scenes) but it doesn't come close to Paulson's real story.

What a coincidence...I just read the book last month, and it became an instant favorite. Gary Paulsen is an incredible storyteller; he just takes you right into the moment, and his observations of his dogs are just so fascinating. I never really knew exactly how powerful sled dogs are, and what it takes to train them, and the mentality that mushers have; the addiction they get to running the race...it's just so amazing.
