when to start adult food?

When should I start feeding my puppy ( 9 months old) adult dog food? Do I do it a 1 yr old? Right now I am feeding him the large breed puppy chow from Science Diet. Any suggestions, he loves it but was just wondering when to switch to adult food. Thanks. Rhonda (Triton's mom)

Hi Rhoda, there has been lots of discussion about puppy food vs. adult food here. You'll find the archives full of valuable information.

But, basically for Newfie pups, we should not be feeding puppy food. We start them out on adult food of HIGH quality, low in protein and low in fat. Check those archives.... you'll be fascinated with the information, I'm sure.

Thank you, Gosh, I didn't realize that, I wish I would have known. May I ask you what kind and what brand you feed yours? Thanks again, Rhonda

my gang is on Eagle Pack. It's a good food, but the protein is just a little low for me.... at 20%. But I add lots of other things to their food every day ie. peanutbutter, fresh veggies, fish, and lots of supplements so I am ok with the protein count.

A really exceptional food for your growing pup is Wellness, deboned chicken by Mother Hubbard. It's protein and fat is right there... where you want it. It's human grade and all natural, baked with all the veggies right in it. Take a look at their site, you may like it. (and it doesn's swell up like the Science Diet food does when soaked.) Just imagine what your pup's tummy looks like after eating that stuff. Wet a piece of it, let it soak in warm water. Yuck... The Wellness just crumbles, no bloating at all.

if that doesn't work, try this one and click on dry, then chicken.
