We have 3 dogs and 3 cats. One of the cats (Ducky) thinks he's a dog and likes to hang out with the dogs. He sleeps on their beds - with or without them. He drinks out of their water dish, uses their doggie door and comes to the kitchen to be fed with them for meals and treats. The other two cats are afraid of the dogs and the dogs treat them like normal cats - bark at them and try to chase them. Our newest rescue Newf McGee who is 2 years young has recently started barking and lunging at Ducky forgetting that this is his friend. Sometimes I think McGee is jealous of Ducky sitting in my lap and getting attention. Last night Ducky was in my lap and McGee lunged at him and wouldn't stop. The cat reacted and ran over to the top of another couch. Our other Newf Ziva (female 3 years old) jumped up on to the couch and body blocked McGee from getting to Ducky the Cat. To me it looked exactly as if she was protecting the cat. My husband thought she was reacting to the excitement and was chasing the cat too. She doesn't chase Ducky and never jumps on that couch ever!
What do you think - would a Newf protect a cat that was part of it's pack or family?
