Wanna Be a Newfi Mom

Hello all -

My husband and I have decided to get a 3rd puppy for our house. I think I married a dog lover! Anyway, we have an almost 10 year old Akita (Chikara) and a 3 year old Lab that we adopted a year ago (Teak, short for Tequila). I have loved my Chikara dearly over her life and would love to have another, but alas... I have been told she just don't get along well with another Akita. She is great with the Lab because he let's her be the boss! So, husband and I have researched and researched and have come accross Newfis. We almost adopted one about a year ago, but the gal who rescued her, decided to adopt her for herself. :( We love everything about Newfis. Their mannerisms with children are what has me wanting one so much. I have 2 sons - 11teen and 8, plus a 5 year old SS and hopefully, sometime maybe, if things go well, another - preferably a girl ;) . We have plenty of room on our 1/2 acre lot to add a 3rd large dog and the boys are so excited about the possiblity. Anyway, what would your thoughts be to adding a Newfi to this wonderful mix? AND... there sure aren't many breaders in Colorado. Does anyone have any experience with the few that are here?

Thanks for all your advise.

Wendy

Brenda, what a bummer you couldn't see the pictures. Please try it this way. I guess you can cut and paste it. I probably typed it wrong the first time. Sorry!

Hi wendy
feel free to email me, i can give you some names of people who are on a referral list.
rules here are not to discuss breeders! also you can go to the newfoundland club of america website, look for regional clubs than find the one near you, contact the person on the website for info.
welcome to the board have fun and enjoy, and remember the search bar at the top of the page you can type in certain words and search the forum for all kinds of subjects that have been hashed over time and again.

Welcome Wendy,
from a neighbor in Utah. We have an 8 month old male Newf that I decided upon because of the reputation of the breed. We were adding him to a family with two teen age daughters still at home, and 8 young grandchildren who visit frequently. We also have a 6 year old Malamute and the new dog was supposed to be his new companion (pack member). I think that whenever you bring home a dog, you are taking a "leap of faith" no matter how carefully you plan it out. Sirius (the Newf) has turned out to be a playful puppy who quickly outgrew his 80 lb. teacher. But they play together, respect each other's food, share toys, and are great company for each other. My teenagers are a little put out by the over eager friendlyness (licks) that Sirius gives out and the smallest children are a little afraid of his size, but I think training and practice will work these problems out. Good luck on your decisions and I have found many helpful ideas on this site. Thanks to all, Lynn

Welcome to Newf Net. I enjoyed your pictures... they're wonderful!

I maintain that one of the best ways to find a breeder is to attend Newf Club events. The NCA has regional clubs all around the country, and Colorado is part of High Country Newfoundland Club's territory. Here is a link to the Regional Club Listings on the NCA's website:

http://www.newfdogclub.org/a_fcp/regional_clubs_list.htm

Just scroll down until you come to their listing!
