Vet Challenges Food Choice

Hi Gang,

Well i had my first bad encounter with my vet of 6 years today. Noel, my Newf mix is on Candidae. I enquired to my vet today how she looks to her weight-wise and she asked about what food I have her on. When i told her she said why is she not on Large-breed puppy food? I explained I am not a fan of corn fillers, nor the fat/protein ratio of Iams or Science Diet. She said why reinvent the wheel? Get her on a large breed food and you won't have to worry about her weight - by the way Noel is 14 weeks today and 23 pounds. OK fans... your input??

I would not use large breed puppy food. It has too much protein in it. My vet recommended it but my breeder said not to use it. I like and trust my vet but in this case I listened to the breeder. What did your breeder recommend?

Last month when James went for his booster shot My Vet told me I should be using the Large Breed stuff as well, But I trust my breeder who has been dealing with Newfs for 29 years a whole lot more than I do a Vet Who might have a few Large dog clients. Anyway to keep him happy, When I see him this Sat for the last set of shots I plan to Lie and say Eukanuba large breed. Short of visiting my house he'll never know it's the Performance Plus by Eukanuba

I did not have a breeder. Noel is a rescue. She was one of ten pups born to the neighborhood stray and a Champion Newf who jumped his fence. Luckily a rescue organization took mother in when she was about due to deliver. They kept the pups until 8 weeks and then adpoted them out. We drove from Pennsylvania to north Carolina to get her.

Hi Kaye. Kodi was 24 lbs at 12 weeks. He was on Eukanuba large breed puppy up to 5 months. He developed "pano" because of the high protein content and had to be switched over to the large breed adult which has a lower protein content. Since the switch he's been fine and no more limping. Being a first time Newfie owner, all this protein stuff was new to me.

I would also not recommend using large breed food. We had Tayla on it for the first six months and as a result she grew too quickly and now has hip dislaysia(only moderate thank goodness).
She is also our first newf and we just did what the vet told us. We will know better next time.
