Veggies & Calories

Maggie is currently on a homemade diet of salmon and sweet potato. We supplement with occasional raw turkey/chicken necks and eggs from the farmers market. She also gets a variety of veggies, usually whatever we cook for ourselves.

We have a CSA share and Maggie gets her share. In the summer, it was familiar things like broccoli, green beans, carrots, etc. Now in the winter we are getting some interesting things that I'm wondering if she can share too.

We have a lot of rutabaga, celeriac, beets, and turnips. Has anyone fed these kinds of root veggies? Obviously this is not a main staple of her diet, but just rounds it out for fun or when she's still a little hungry after getting her allotment for the day.

Also, do any of you increase the calories you feed in the winter if your dogs are more active? If so, how much?

My friend feeds turnips, beetroot shredded to her dogs in winter time, best way to check on calories is the rib test

I feed all veggies...root and all. It is only the onions, grapes, advocado and some nuts i do not feed. Mine get whatever comes out of our veggie garden. If they eat it they get it....I make a veggie slop (grated/minced/chopped) that I often freeze in small lots and just grab, defrost and feed. Yussie loves to steal turnips out of our pantry (or potatoes) and eat them raw

Thats great! I love the idea of grating/freezing. I am definitely going to do that with the extra stuff from the CSA! Maggie loved our garden last year, but we didn't grow this kind of stuff.

She would steal whatever she could from the garden...even digging up the carrots!

I have not changed what I feed Chumley and he's dropped from 164 lbs. around mid september to presently 157 lbs. We've definately ramped up our walks with the cooler weather.
I feed Chumley Tast of the Wild Salmon kibble one cup in the am plus 2 tablespoons of wet and one cup in the pm plus 2 tablespoons of wet. I realize this is underfeeding, but it's what I've had to do because the men in my house sometimes cave in when he begs for their food. I know, I know bad owner, but I try to do everything in moderation. I will increase his food should he get too close to 150 lb though.
His favorite veggie is broccoli, but I've had conflicting reports on whether it's good or bad for dogs so I just give a little.

You're not a bad mom! Ha...I understand. Maggie's dad often gives her the last bite of whatever he is eating and just tells her to "look cute." Right. That's helpful.
