vaccination questions

The Lepto thread in the Maladies and diseases got me thinking...

Lucy had all of her puppy shots, but now it's a year later and the vet says she is due for her boosters. At this age, can we titer and just give the boosters she needs? Also, she is a sensitive girl, and I'd like to not barrage her system with a lot at once. I know that our vet gives those "combination shots". What specifically should I ask for, to get "single shots", instead?

What is the holistic remedy that you give your dogs when they get their boosters, to lessen any reactions? Where do you get it, and what is the dose?

I don't do any vaccinations except for rabies (by law). When they get their rabies I dose them with thuja and lyssin for 5 days.

As far as boosters, I definitely would titer them and see what the results are before boostering.

Laurel, you can definitely titer now. And if you need to boost, do it in single dose shots, not combination. We can only get singles at our holist. No one else will do them around here.

Same with Lyssin and Thuja afterwards but only one dose before and 1 dose a day for 2 days after.

I've never done lepto though. Is that the one lots of dogs react to? I'm not sure.

Hi Hawk,

Titers are done by drawing blood. The blood is then tested for the antibodies (protection) for a specific disease.

Thuja and lyssin are homeopathic remedies. I can get thuja at my HFS but have to get the Lyssin from my holistic vet. You can also get them on the internet for various prices. I think both the dosings that we use are 30C (they come in different strengths, liquids and pellets). They are both thought to prevent, treat vaccinosis.

Wendy Volhard has a really great chapter in her book about homeopathy if you're interested.
