Miss Maddy came in today for her first official grooming in over a month. If you recall I posted about her here http://www.newf.net/Forums/showthread.php?t=100158&highlight=Maddy

I wish I had remembered my camera, she looked fantastic. When I first met her she was 72 lbs of skeleton covered in open sores and tufts of hair with goopy green eyes and nails that were beginning to turn under. With some great advice and support from NCNE Rescue's "K-Team" at the Spring Fling, I was able to gently persuade her owner to look into her health issues...and he DID!

In just a month she has been diagnosed with beef and lamb and several other food allergies, a systemic pyoderma staph infection and mild entropion. She completed a 21 day course of Clavamox for the pyoderma. She's thriving on Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish and with turkey recipe Satin Balls she has put on 14 lbs. She's getting fish oil and probiotics added to her diet. Her nails have been trimmed back and as of today...they are all just off the ground when she stands.

She has been getting medicated baths but today was her 'Spa-Day'. All the scabby scruff has finally been dispatched and after a soak with hypo-allergenic shampoo, a coconut lemon verbena hot oil treatment and a nail dremel, she was positively gleaming.

This little Newf is still painfully thin, her newly growing coat looks like a puppy cut. But her eyes are clear, her ears aren't red and weepy and she was interacting with the other dogs in the shop. Her owner brought her in without a single matt or tangle. He was so proud of his girl when he dropped her off and got a "Great Job, Dad. She looks like a different dog." He's been like a sponge with all the health and grooming advice...I'm proud of him for all he's done to help his 'Baby.'

Maddy is the sweetest. Just like a Newf, she's full of kisses and wiggles now that she's feeling better. I even gave her two little pink bows above her trimmed ears to match her new pink collar. What a little doll!

:hugs:Thanks Tricia for taking the time to educate Maddy's owner..Seems like a little education and direction made a huge difference in the quality of this lovely girl's life..Scarlet read this post along with me and she said she is very jealous of the pink bows!!

Hey Tricia, you rock. It's amazing how positive and gentle encouragement win out over self-righteous indignation every time. Instead of making the dad feel like a loser, you've made him feel like he is winning. Good job!

When I read the first thread, I thought... I know Tricia will find a way to steer this man in the right direction! I want to thank you for all you've done for Maddie and her papa! :hugs: I imagine he *was* very proud of his girl. Would love to hear more updates as time goes on.

The only thing I'm to be congratulated on is learning to control my shock, verbal output and tendency to be a wee bit judgemental when faced with a dog in this condition. This is a lesson in guiding without being overbearing. Ummm....I have to say I have a tendency to have some control issues...lol.

PS: Scarlet, girlfriend, do I have some ribbons for you! Little Mermaid or beach themed with Lobsta n' Crabs under Umbrellas suit your fancy?

Good for you Tricia. What a huge difference you've made in the life of this dog! And her owner too. And future Newfs he may own. There's some quote about how the world gets changed one small deed at a time. Can't remember it now, but that's what you've done. :hugs:

You know, I've always liked the saying "Why assume malice when ignorance will suffice?"

It seems to fit here. The dad was ignorant, not malicious, and you were able to change that!

Nice one! You've done a good thing here, both for the dog and her owner. It sounds like he just needed the nudge in the right direction. What's wonderful is that you've developed a trusting relationship with him that can keep that progress going! WTG!
