Trying To Get This Right

Ok.. I have decided not to get the Dog Gone Pain for now.

I currently have Murphy on 2 advanced osteo bi-flex a day,

Osteo Bi-Flex® Advanced contains a precise balance of leading joint care ingredients including Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Manganese and Vitamin C, plus the power of the revolutionary proprietary blend, Joint Shield™. The key ingredient in Joint Shield™ is a potent extract of Boswellia Serrata Acid called 5-LOXIN®. Taking 5-LOXIN® showed improvement in Joint

2000 mg wild salmon and fish oil

Wild Salmon & Fish Oil features a triple blend from small fish - sardines, anchovy, and mackerel - combined with fish oil from wild salmon. It helps promote heart health by attacking the bad fats and neutralizing their effects. It provides 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA per soft gel capsule. All of Swiss’ Omega-3s and Wild Salmon Fish oils are sourced from wild, non-endangered fish. All are tested for traces of heavy metals, PCBs ...

And today I purchased some MSM which I will give 1000mg 3 times a day.

Am I missing anything.. ester c perhaps??

I know this is a different situation, because Murphy has had surgery & Bär has not.
Bär has very bad hips, right one worse then left.
I think you started the Osteo Byflex about the same I did, around 2 months ago?
What I noticed with Bär on the Osteo is, that it did not seem to do much for him. He needed Aspririn more often & has not gone without out a limp the whole 2 months.
I put him back on his old regiment last week & he seems to be improving slowly. Yesterday was the first day that he made the walk to the mail without his rear end being totaly compromised after the walk.
Here is what I give Bär daily.
Glucosamine - 2000mg
Chondroitin - 1600mg
MSM - 1600mg
Ester C - 500mg [any more & Bär is loose]
Wild Salmon Oil - 1000mg
B100 Complex - 1 Tablet
Hyaluronic Acid - 100mg [just started this one 2 days ago, so don't know how it will work]

Hope you find something that works for Murphy. I know how frustrationg it is to see our poor babys in pain.

Just a thought Jen, if the Osteo Bi-Flex contains MSM, is it OK to give 3000mgm more a day in another tab? I don't know, just asking.

Here's what I give Hudson, all on the advice of our holistic vet. Needless to say ... he has the "old person" pill box (it's huge!)

4 Dasuquin
3,000 mg Ester C
Knox gelatin (one packet)
Phyto-flex
MSM (I'd have to check the dosage ... it's powder/crystal form)
SOD & Bosweila
800 iu Vit. E
Salmon oil
Multi-vitamin

Plus a few additional herbals unrelated to his joint issues.

You can see between the Dasuquin (with MSM added), Phyto-flex and MSM, we have a ton of gluc. and MSM in his diet. All of this might be overkill, but something's working so I don't want to mess with it.

I do believe you need to give Vit. E with salmon oil in order to reap the benefits, but I'd have to look that up to get the "why."

Someone on the ortho group said there was not enough MSM in the Osteo??

Jen, can you get Cosamin DS near you? I get mine at Walmart. It's pricier than the Osteo Bi Flex but I have noticed a HUGE difference in Gabe since switching him from the OBF to the Cos DS. Big enough that I'm keeping him on it. The other supps you listed sound great. ;-)

Oh good point Angela ... we also give Adequan (subcutaneously, not intramuscular) and I swear it's a wonder drug. I was very hesitant to resort to that as it seemed like a pretty serious drug, but I'm so happy we did. Has made quite a difference in Hudson's quality of life.

I give him the human form- Cosamin DS (the canine form is Cosequin DS but its more expensive). I give Gabe three capsules per day... Open them and sprinkle on his kibble... Add a tad of water... Mix around.

I have a feeling that Cosamin DS is not available in Canada, I know it used to be but think some regulating board banned it here, dog only knows why lol.

I get phenomenal deals on Cosamin DS on Ebay. A fraction of the price found in stores and online.

We use the Cosamin DS too - for the dogs who have arthritis.
Wild Salmon Oil
Ester C
Vit E
MSM
Dog Gone Pain

One thing...the Glucosomine and the MSM can cause nausea. So make sure he's getting a meal with those.

Ester C depends on tolerance. You should start with 500 mgs then up it by 500mgs per week...and keep an eye on the stool. 2000 or 2500 mgs would be the goal (I think) with a dog his size. If you see diarrhea after increasing the dose, back down to the previous dose and stay there.

Roger does great on Cosamin DS also. He get's 6 pills (3000mg) a day. I definately noticed a difference when I switched him to this. Everything and everyone is different. Cosamin DS didn't work as well for me as the Osteo Bi-Flex does.
