Tissue Salts

Haven't heard of that, but I did put Hugo on Dr. Jean Dodds liver cleansing diet, plus Ursodiol and milk thistle, and it cured his liver failure. Dodds has a website www.hemopet.org and I emailed her as soon as I got the diagnosis. She was kind enough to respond quickly and sent me to another website (I forgot the name) that had the diet on it.

The diet, which I started him on cold turkey, was a homemade one of cod, vegetables and other additives that was fairly expensive, but so worth doing. And he loved it! After we got the all clear on his liver, I switched him to Science Diet liver formula kibble which he stayed on until he died at 13 3/4 years old. He was happy and active nearly to the last few weeks of his life. It was his hips that finally gave out on him and he couldn't get up at all.

Good luck with your sweet pupper!

I thought liver failure was a death sentence.
So did I. You can't imagine how I felt when his vet said he was cured!

You can also Google "Dodd's liver cleansing diet" for variations on what I listed below (which was from Dr. Dodds herself). Here's a couple of sites, but there are others as well...http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/liver_diet.htm and www.nutriscan.org/knowledge-center/cleansing-diets.html.Most of the published diets have amounts listed for 15 to 25 lb dogs, so you will have to calculate the amount for your dog's weight.

I found Hugo's liver cleansing diet!!! I made up a huge batch each week, divided it into single meal portions and then froze. He also was prescribed Ursodiol by his regular vet and she recommended milk thistle (got it from the health store). I used fresh veggies and cod and then cooked them. Then, when cool, mixed in the rest of the ingredients.

Aside from his food, he also got SAMe (from health store) as a supplement and was on Amoxicillin, Metronidazole and Tramadol for a while. The food was portioned out into four meals per day (see below for his schedule). This was so his liver wouldn't have to process so much at one time. Also, I couldn't find all the supplements listed below. So I had to leave out the zinc citrate, di-phospate and multimineral. But I have to say that a VERY important part of this treatment was the Ursodiol from his regular vet.

Weekly Diet for 125 lb dog: (recalculate the amounts for other weight dogs)

175 oz white potato - cooked and skinned
210 oz sweet potato - cooked
105 oz zucchini - cooked
210 oz celery - cooked
210 oz cod - cooked (you can substitute any ocean whitefish, but cod is preferred)

210 oz low fat cottage cheese
210 oz low fat yogurt
7.5 egg shells (I ground these up)
35 tsp canola oil

125 mg vit B compound
1250 mg Ester C
200 mg zinc citrate or gluconate
6.25 tsp di-calcium phosphate
15 caps Multimineral
25 100 IU Vit E

Feeding and Medication Schedule:

6:00 AM Food-1 cup; Amoxycillin-2 tabs; Metronidazole-1 tab; Tramadol-2 tab;Ursodiol-1 cap

8:00 AM SAMe-1.25 tabs; Milk Thistle-3 cc

10:00 AM Food-1/2 cup

2:00 PM Food-1/2 cup

6:00 PM Food-1 cup; Amoxycillin-2 tabs; Metronidazole-1 tab; Tramadol-2 tab;Ursodiol-1 cap

8:00 PM SAMe-1.25 tabs; Milk Thistle-3 cc

So now I know that tissue salts are electrolytes... we learn something new everytime. I am glad you have now connected with someone who has had a dog with a similar condition.

I hope this all helps.... still need to find out why the liver failure happened though

I don't normally post here anymore. Angela gave me a heads up about this post. My girl had liver failure for almost 4 yrs. Hers, like Angela's Newf, was caused by copper toxicity. I put her on the Dr Dodds diet and almost lost her because we did not know at the time it was due to copper. Dr Dodds diet, while great for most liver issues, is not low in copper. She crashed... We got her on D-Pennicillamine among other pills such as Sam-E, Milk Thistle, pred, Vitamin E, Zinc, Ursodiol and others. Use the human versions. The supplements regular vets give them are not high enough in dose.
I agree with Ronnie, you have to find out the cause of the liver failure before you can treat it properly. If she has hepatitis, what is causing the inflammation? Metals? Toxin? Infection? Also some gastro problems such as IBD can cause liver issues. Lola finally had an open liver biopsy after she crashed. We got a definite diagnosis and treated her. She recovered and lived for years very happily.
Angela forwarded you my email address since I don't come here often. Feel free to contact me by email.
Please, if you can, find an internist. Especially if you can find one that specializes in Hepatic issues. I am also on FB as Kelly Jac
