The Wild Child Strikes Back!

Sigh... I need some advice on how to handle a dog who is completely addicted to water. Our club had a mock water test on Sunday and our performance was not pretty. Ursa was so intent on just swimming that she ignored every command I gave her, dropped the line on both the life ring and take a line exercises, she retrieve the wrong article (would not redirected), could care less about the underwater retrieve article (just wanted to swim) and took the oar to shore. Granted, she didn't get much of a warm up but it was like she was out in space somewhere. Any advice on how to correct this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Practice, practice, practice. I know that sounds dismissive, but it will help. Also, break down the exercises into baby steps and perfect them (like holding something). Then chain them together piece by piece. Sometimes, more land work is helpful. At the mock tests and training sessions, be sure she gets enough exercise and some obedience work before her turn. Some dogs, especially if crated, get all wound up and too excited when they finally get to swim.
