The ideal wood floor

Hi!! I had my extremely old rug (green sculptured - yuk) torn up and found beautiful, ubt old and dry wood floors underneath. They need to be refinished, but I would greatly appreciate any info on the best way to refinish them and should I have them coated in polyurethene or is there something better that is not so irritating (and possilby harmful?) to my dogs? Maybe just sanding them and a light polish, as I will be puttin area rugs on 90% or more of the open areas. I just want to know the best way to have them in good shape and not cause any problems to my dogs. THANK YOU!!!!

You know that even if you coat them it won't take long for the finish to dull from the dogs. Also you can't be in your place when they do it. The smell is nasty and harmful to you and any pets. I don't have any suggestions as my hardwood floors are in terrible shape. I would rather have tile or even the imitation hardwood that they sell at Homedepot which doesn't lose it's shine but I imagine the big ones will lose their footing. It's a tough call but good luck.

When we built our house in 1996 we put in prefinished wood floors. The finish wore off in certain spots and it did scratch. We had it sanded and refinished about two years ago. After alot of research we found a product called Basic Coatings StreetShoe. We did the satin finish. It's a water-based finish that doesn't have the horrible smell like some of the others. This stuff rocks. No more scratches and it hasn't worn off anywhere. When it was being done I stayed at my mom's house with Chance and Sydney (that was interesting). We stayed three nights to make sure the finish had really dried so we wouldn't have any dog or people prints in the finish. It does have to be applied by a professional. We just ripped up the rug in our living room/dining room and put in a prefinished wood floor that is real close in color to the other floor (they butt up to each other). In a year or two we plan to have them both rescreened and finished with the Streetshoe so they will match even better.

Thank you so much! Could you please tell me where you found it? I'll check my Home Depot and Lowe's but if it is anywhere else, I will go there.

We (the public) can't buy it as far as I know. We had a company come in and do the work. It's from Basic Coatings. Good luck.
