Hi! I'm Leska in Oregon City, just south of Portland. Have a 3 year old male Newf, Orka.

Beginning Friday, March 1, 2013, I will be offering practice sessions for:
Obedience, Rally, Drafting, Joring, Water Training and Grooming

In the Fall I will add Tracking and next Winter Conformation.

I have a website for scheduling, photos and descriptions that I will be reactivating soon.

Practices will be weekday mornings from 7:30/a to 8:30/a and on Fridays, 8/a to 4/p.

Practices will be held at the large playground and shelter across the street from my house. There is ample free parking and lots of space. My house will be open for restrooms, refreshments, K9III clean up, and watching instructional DVDs.

I have almost all the gear needed for all activities and sports and will complete the rather vast collection during February. My house and garage have turned into giant Newf tackrooms :)

On weekends, practices will be at other locations and will involve actual performance of the activities, such as caninordicwalking, canicross, scooterjoring, skijoring, kayaking, water rescues, and hiking / backpacking etc.

The cost is $1 per session which will be given monthly to the Newf Club's Rescue fund.

My hope is that other Newf owners discover the joys of training and having fun with their furbears.

Yes, there are other Newf owners in the Vancouver / Portland area.

There are 2 Newf Clubs here and a Seattle Newf Club. If you get involved in NCA training you may find yourself driving up and down I-5 :)

In the Portland area there are quite a few Newf owners not in the club and you can stumble across them on Facebook.

I am always up for playdates and am out every day and night in parks, rivers and trails with Orka, so if you like taking walks, and training, let me know where you like to go, or if you want to try some new places.

"If it does not exist, and you want it, create it, do it yourself."

"Build it and they will come."

We'll see if these metaphysical laws work in this case!

When Orka was young I so wanted playdates ... now training practice ... really hard to find beginner classes for some activities. This is set up so ppl will be able to glance at the meetup website, decide when / what is appealing, drop in, or suggest something to work on / place(s) to go.

Another reason I decided to do this was to make it easy and open. Here, with water training for instance, in the summer, group practice is super secret. It is almost impossible to find out when or where it is taking place if at all. Beyond classified. The land pre-water sessions are accessible but after that, I'm not sure, because nobody will tell me, what one has to do to be included.

So this will be practically free, open, accessible, easy, fun. Orka and I do this anyway, so if nobody ever shows up it does not matter -- at least it's out there for anybody who realizes how much training enhances the relationship experience with one's furbear.

And with Newfs, well, considering size and ability, imho imperative for sanity.

Another resource for Whybu1: There are some Newfs who go to Fido's Indoor Dog Park for daycare, if you ever need that service:

And here's a great source for many area dog parks, maps lists reviews:

A note: Be super watchful at dog parks. Lately they have been subject to tampering, poisoning and other nasty attacks. Best to have a really strong "Leave It" and your dog taught to never eat anything unless you give it to him. The dog parks in this area have their own personalities and you may have to try them out to find one that suits you. We go to all of them depending on where we are on any given day, fitting one in as just another stop on adventures.
