Looking for some suggestions.... I bought glucosamine and chondroitin tablets today for my guys. They used to eat vitamins with their food, but now they spit them out. How can I trick them into eating these new large pills? Also, what dosage do you give your dogs? These tablets contain 250mg glucosamine and 200mg chondroitin.

Welcome any suggestions....THANKS!

Peanut butter.......thats my secret to getting them to eat anything they really dont want. For some reason they will eat anything with peanut butter on it.

As for dosage I cant help there........But if the peanut butter doesnt work my 2nd choice is cheese (expecially cream cheese cuz you can mold it around the pill)

But with 3 dogs I usually dont run into trouble they're so afraid someone else will get it if they dont wolf down what ~might~ possibly be a treat since its coming from mom they dont notice what it is I'm giving them.

Good Luck

I agree. Peanut Butter and cheese are Nectar of the Gods for Newfs.

When I gave Khiori g/c I got the vet kind. They were chewable with meat flavors. However, they were much more expensive than regular over the counter kind. Sorry, I don't know the doseage.

As far as getting them to eat them. There are pill splitters you can buy to get them smaller. Can also try to pulverize them with a mortor and pestle. For Khiori, again, when she was on phenobarbital for her seizures it was imperitive she get every pill. I would put them in a mini-marshmallow to make sure she got her meds. Good luck!

I just ask my breeder about supplements ,she said absoulutly NO! But i really dont know anything about that matter. So what would you guys do ? Bridget,( the vet also said no)

Personally I would only give what there is a need for. For example Glucosamine is good for dogs with arthritis or other joint problems. We now give Cozy Vitamin E and may consider such a supplement in the not to distant future. For a normal healthy dog I probably would not, but just like diet, this is sort of a personal preference deal.

I give all my girls a multi vitamin each day. Sara and Panda also get Glucosamine (1500mg)and Chondroitin(1200 mg)--two tablets a day. They also get their low thyroid medication. That's all

Nani gets fresh food (certain meats, meat bones, veggies, fruits) as her "treats" which contain all the vitamins you could ask for. Vitamin C doesn't hurt, though. They sell "Ester C" made specially for dogs on the internet.

For my Bear (11 year old Chow), he must have concentrated glucosamine - powder form - for the arthritis he's developed in his rear left hip. Otherwise, it's fresh snacks for him, as well.

However, I agree with Gad. It's a matter of personal preference. Some holistic veterinarians are all for supplements and some "conventional" vets will pooh-pooh the very idea. Whatever your decision, read everything you can about it and your pup will be fine.
