strange situation

Yesterday on our walk we met some people, stopped for pets, etc. Then when we walked past the Library a guy had a bag of Puproni (I think) and he wanted to give some to my dogs. He was standing on the sidewalk waiting for us, just kind of strange. I said no thanks, they have allergies (true). We stopped for pets and then I moved on. Would you take treats in that situation?

Just like you did....but I would keep an I in the future. Any time a 'weirdo' is too interested in my dogs I jump to the worst conclusion first...dog napper. And since when do dogs like dried flowers??? Fresh ones growing in the flower beds yes.....:whistling:

I generally tend to respond, "Thank you so much! ....I'm sure Oliver would love it but the Vet says he has to drop a few pounds....that's why we're out getting some exercise."

Thankfully, Oliver doesn't have any allergies to speak of, but I don't really want him taking treats from strangers.

Never faced that..except a dog bone at the groomers ..or drive in at credit union. I would also say diet concerns..and 'play on through'..without allowing anything to be eaten. My mind goes to a 'what-up'..immediatly!! ina n HB n Kesa

could be someone who has seen your dogs before. i usually have treats in my pocket, you could suggest him give one of your treats instead or just refuse. i also think its a good idea to never let anyone know if possible that your pets are not neutered or spayed!! i know a neuter is harder to hide but a unspayed female would make a good target for theives!!

Did I miss something? Puperoni is a dog treat, not a flower.

I don't let my dogs take treats from strangers either. You can't be too safe.

I think Vicki read the post quick and thought of Potpourri (or however you spell it!)

But I agree I do not let Jackson take things from strangers either. Just like the kids.

It might be totally innocent, but someone standing on the street with a bag of dog treats just seems a little too strange. I think we would say "thanks, but no thanks" and keep moving.

When we have visited a breeder, we took an unopened bag of treats (after first asking if we could even bring them) so that they could see they were direct from the store.

Think of tainted Halloween candy - don't take anything from strangers!

Our guys get treats from bank drive-up, family, friends and pet store employees...No strangers! Max does have mega allergies, though.

I agree with everyone here. Unless I know who's giving the treat I trust no one. You never know what someone might put in the treat to make your dogs sick or worse. There are some very sick people out there as we all know and it's unfortunate that we have to think the worse to protect our babies.

Anytime we go out for a little socialization drive to the Starbucks or even for a walk up to the canoe launch I always have a bag of carrots or some liver treats in my pocket. Whenever kids (or adults) stop us to pet and ask if they can have a bite of whatever it is they have I ususally say "no thank you but you can offer them a carrot" and then I explain why they eat carrots or why they get the liver treats.
It works fine. Everyone is happy especially Palin and Sydney. They get to SIT and they get a treat for it too.
I wouldn't however, under any circumstances allow a stranger to hand out a treat from their own pocket. I agree that there's something weird about that whole thing with the guy on the corner...creeeeeepy!

I tend to say we don't give our dogs "treats." I sound like a nut-nick but between Winston's food obsession and his shark-like "snap" it's not a good idea. I've never thought of someone poisoning my dogs. I think that is probably not what the man was trying to do, but seriously, if you felt funny, it's OK to say no thanks.
