Straightening Coat?

What should we use to straighten our 8 month old Newf's coat? It gets quite curly in the back. Is it possible to 'train' Newfy hair to go straight? What products do people use before showing that helps? We use a Double K dryer, which helps alot, but I've heard that there are lots of high quality sprays that help the process along...

Thanks!

There are sprays available, but the way most groomers get curls out if the coat is to blow it dry with a high volicity dryer and use a comb or brush to straighten it. You must dry it till it is completely dry or it will curl later. Moose is good to use to straighten the coat. Personally, unless you are showing your dog I would not put anything in the coat. Just straighten it as best you can while drying. Who cares if there is a curl or two??

A few curls? He looks like he has an afro!

I'm only really worried about when I show him, but also for when we take him to any classes

Thanks!

Because the standard calls for a straight flat coat, some waves are "ok"
A curly coat is not desirable

Gee I didn't know that! Who ever came up with that rule has never been to Newfoundland. If they seen the Newfs there they'd faint.Mind you they are all pets and true working dogs.

The standard was written for a reason

A curly coat does not make for a water resistant coat. Straight, flat falls back into place after petting backward, is a better water repeller

And just curious, your comment about "true working dogs" are you saying that show dogs can't/don't work?
