I need a fix!

I may be dogless now, but still enjoy reading your stories every day, so hope to hear some fun-in-the-snow, or bad doggie tales, or the like.

Here's one to bring back some memories. Chase thinks she has to go outside and eat snow instead of getting a drink of water inside. So she eats snow and comes inside and vomits it all up.

Nothing fun to report here. Elvis turns ten on Tuesday (TEN!!!) and has really slowed down. He had a TPLO 6 years ago and had started limping on that leg so we're keeping him comfortable with rest and a substantial amount of pain medicine. We've gotten a lot of snow recently and while he likes to go outside, he doesn't run after the snowblower or chase us like he used to. He's still adorably sweet and follows our daughter around sometimes. We're expecting Daughter #2 in March and hope he's well enough to welcome her as excitedly as he welcomed the first.

Snow and Newfs. Spirit loved to eat the snow, too. Right down to the last unmelted flake in the yard. I swear he could have been a snow detection dog. If it was there, even a tiny patch left, he'd find it.

I did try to get him to play in it, but he wasn't terribly interested. Tried playing "toss the snowball" with him, but he never could find it. LOL.

He never did chase things, thank goodness.

Thanks for the stories! It helps.

I dont have any recent snow stories, thank dog. We don't do well with snow here on the "wet coast". However, Wednesday starts the winter session for school for Splash. He is in a class getting ready for CD and another Rally Novice.

His biggest pastime is humping Mowgli which M tolerates and we shout. Hopefully he will grow out of this "sport". lol.

Maggie and Carl, congratulations on # 2 coming, really sorry to hear Elvis isn't doing too well, very hard to believe he is 10, where do the years go?

Our pups love to go for car rides, so yesterday when we were headed to a nearby grizzly bear rescue center (that is kind of like a very small zoo) we brought the dogs to just sit in the car for the few minutes that we spend in the one habitat center. But at the gate they said that dogs were welcome to come in as well! I don't trust our golden, but brought Tink in to see what she would think of seeing a grizzly bear.

Well, her nose was going crazy but I am not entirely sure she saw the bear - how is a newfies eyesight anyway? It was so fun seeing her sniff like crazy though and I was proud of her being fairly relaxed and not try to go after the bear in the enclosure. I even took some video that I haven't had a chance to share with my husband yet, but am very excited to let him see too.
Taking Tink to see her first grizzly bear totally made my week and I am still smiling about it. I plan to take her back to see if I can be more sure if she actually can see one, and not just smell it.

Wow! I would love to see a photo of a Newf and a grizzly together. Well, not together, but you know what I mean. How cool!

Let's see Jane, it's been pretty eventful here. I just haven't posted anything cause it seems like one thing after another. (and yes congrats to you & your family Maggie!) We had a blizzard maybe 2 weekends ago. Vin got up early to get to the shop to plow it out, probably around 6ish. So it's me and the kids & grandkids. Zeke is now 10 1/2 and I think I mentioned he's been a little nervous/anxious as of late and the 18" of snow certainly didn't help.

I was hoping he wouldn't go outside until Vin came home cause we can work better with him together as a team, then me by myself. He had to go out :( I knew I was gonna be in trouble so I text 2 of my neighbor's to make sure they were home and could help out in a pickle if I needed them. Get him outside and he's nervous but walks out to the yard, does his business but refused to walk on the concrete or paved driveway back to the house. I shoveled it 20 times & put down salt so it wasn't slick but he refused. We have camera's set up so I could go inside and warm a little and watch to see if he would follow (he didn't) but for the most part I sat on a folding chair chatting with my dog for 3 hrs in a blizzard. Finally and reluctantly I put the harness on him and explained to the boys helping that it's 175 lbs of him fighting us, when we go to lift. I think once he realized what I was going to do, he overcame the fear of walking on the driveway and started to go, they boys didn't expect it and I had to yell don't let him stop, stay close cause we might have to lift him up the steps, but he managed doing it with all of us by his side in support.

The following weekend, and please I hope no one holds this against me but I felt that I had no choice and my thought was, if they go, they fast & together. 12:30 pm, We get a knock on the door from some firefighters saying get out of your house right now huge gas leak close by (they ended up evacuating 40 to 50 homes) I wake the teenage grandson, he thinks I'm joking & the little 5 year old is crying & scared to death, Vin's daughter is saying I need a shower and have to go to work and I explain in very frank tone, this is death knocking people, get yourself dressed warmly and get in the car....NOW! Oh yeah, and it's the coldest day of the year, 2 degrees.

Vin & I contemplate back and fourth over moving the dogs, there is still so much snow and ice and Zeke will not handle that very well and Myra has a weak back end but I could get her in the car but it's been a few years, how will she react? Last time at the Emergency vet I had to give a DNR cause her heart was beating so fast they thought she would have a heart attack. I texted the neighbor across the street, he has a long huge driveway and asked if we could just park in his driveway, so at least we had eyes on the house. 2 hrs later Vin and the firemen are digging all the sewers open (from the 18" of snow the week before) cause all the gas is trapped in the sewer system.

Then they evacuate the neighbor who's driveway we are parked in. Vin stays outside in the cold, in front of the house cause he refused to leave the dogs and says 55 years is a good life & if we go, we go together. Wonderful, just wonderful. I take the grandkids and stay local, the outside of the development. They finally find the pipe that burst and it's in the street between a neighbor's and our house, so at that point they can turn the gas off. We finally get back in the house around 4:30pm with no gas, but at least we are all together, house was at hoovering between 55/60 degrees (with a few electric heaters) and newfs were happy. They got the gas/heat back on around 1/2 am.

I must say that I can't take any more drama, I'm done for 2018! :uglyhammer:

Wow Dawn! I know I asked for stories but I had no idea...! I'm so sorry you had to endure that. Major difficulties are compounded 100 fold when you have huge dogs. Especially when they are elderly or anxious or feeble. But it sounds like they were able to cope.

I'm so glad you were able to get through it, too, and I hope nothing like that ever happens again.

The last couple of months, nearly every time Spirit went outside, he refused to come up the two easy steps unless I went out an clipped on his leash. The weird thing is that I just let the leash hang limp in my hand. Didn't pull or put tension on it. It was simply a mental crutch for him. I think he just wanted to make sure I was there in case he needed me and the leash was that assurance. It was like he had ME on leash. Silly dog, but you know, I did everything his way and that made us both happy.

Whatever doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right? I know what your talking about with the leash cause Zeke is like that. He also goes out and finds that last bit of snow to make his dog/dirt/snow angels :) I do love that most, cause he's so happy and comfortable, and well Myra, she still manages to find and eat the only sticks in the yard under 18" of snow.....how does she do that?

I love them both so much & will miss them something awful and I hope that I to can come on NN and get the stories that make me smile. I still go back to that one thread I started cause I needed a pick-me-up and NN came through with flying colors :) I will gladly share stories. Even the one where I picked human poo out of Zeke's mouth, LMAO!

Here's one to bring back some memories. Chase thinks she has to go outside and eat snow instead of getting a drink of water inside. So she eats snow and comes inside and vomits it all up.
At least Chase didn't jump on your bed BEFORE vomiting! Mine did that during a recent storm!

And there's more. hahahahaha

Next story now, this one happened last week. We go do our normal morning routine eat & go out. It was drizzling when I took Zeke out, I'm usually in my PJ's and a robe. He decided to cross the street and I had no problem with that, there was no ice/snow and he's usually better and feels more confident when the road is wet.

Not this time, it started to pour and we were in what I call the triangle (a spot across the road where it's kind of a turn around and has grass) well he refused to lift his feet to cross over the curb and walk on the road. So we got stuck there. I walked back and fourth looking for the correct spot but it never came :( I finally decided to sit on the curb waiting for someone in the house to realize we didn't come back in. Finally about 1/2 hour passes and Vin has that light bulb go off. He walks out and I start waving my hands, we are over here!!! He comes walking over and says why don't you have your phone? I'm like really, I can barley open my eyes and you want me to remember my phone??? I explain what happen and he tried with no luck, so I ran home for the front harness so he can lift him over the curb, and that works finally we are all soaked and late for work.

If I make it sound like Zeke is feeble, he's not, he's just gotten weird/quirky about things and you never know what it's going to be about. Currently has lost his privileges to cross the road unless his mom remembers her phone!

Last night I took out the boots and put them on his rear feet, he was uncomfortable but I wanted to see if that would help. He seemed to be dragging his feet and ended up tripping up the last step. Vin says next time he wants to try his front feet. My pop made a step ladder for the dogs years go, I'm gonna make him start doing that each time we go out.

Oh yeah, and now my parents have the flu, this year keeps getting better & better.

Wonder if there is something with his eyesight as well? If it wasn't so frustrating for you it would have been funny, I can picture you sitting on the curb, do your neighbours think you are weird??!!

Zeke sounds so much like Spirit who could easily step over the 6 " high garden border fence, but was so reluctant to go up one 6" high front step. But ya gotta love those quirky dogs. Life wouldn't be nearly as interesting without them.

It's frustrating and funny at the same time. (hopefully you all do see the humor, cause that's kinda why I share the stories) I refuse to let it get to me frustrated with him, I just roll with it, and it keeps me on my toes!

As for the neighbor's well, they probably do think I'm nutz but I don't care. To be honest, they probably call me the crazy dog lady and I'm happy with that. I originally had the vet check his eyes and he was pleased with them last visit but I'll have him check again, our 6 month visit is due in Feb.

Raven's current situation. She is such a good girl with the new puppy.

Well there's nothing wrong with being the crazy dog lady,we can then attribute so much to it as a good exscuse.

Our pack is fairly quiet atm though you never know when one gets something into their minds.

Taking them out means going in the car as there is a safe field l know ten miles away where they can let off steam without me worrying about people upsetting Bodie our rescue gsd.

Well Raven and bodie get in the car immediately,Luna no.
She has to do three laps of the car, check out the side door and make sure everything is ok before she condescends to jump in.also even when going back into the house l have to get a lead on her or she's off.

She probably has it in her mind that going back into the house means she's got to behave so she goes for every trick in the book to avoid it.

Happy furkids though

Wow. Dawn. There's no topping that. Glad it all turned out okay. My best snow story (BTW I hate snow) comes from 1994. We were supposed to get a dusting and ended up with 36 inches at our house. Everything was buried. A visitor's big bomb of a Chevy Impala was gone. The fence was gone. The pool was gone. In letting the dogs out, the dogs didn't know what to do. I suited up and walked out into the yard and Ursa followed me and then took off on her own jumping to make her way through the snow that was rapidly reaching my waist. Suddenly, she jumps right into a big drift and disappears. She fights her way up to the surface and that's it. She won't move. I get back to the house, call for help, and four of us dig a pathway to her where she casually strolls back to the house. Still nobody has peed. My girls only go on grass, so we had to shovel pathways to two large "bathrooms" where grass showed through the snow. Later we dug out the fence so they couldn't walk out as the snow got packed. We also built a wall of snow around the pool so no one fell in. The temperature dropped and we had snow for two weeks. Unheard of here. I ended up with what looked like an ant farm in my back yard, with passages and bathrooms all over the half acre. From then on every time it snowed, the two dogs Ursa and her buddy a Lab/Doberman sat on the deck until we put in their bathrooms.
