State of Holistic Vet Medicine

I was very fortunate (maybe the only good thing about mudji's osteosarcoma) to find a wonderful holistic vet who is a member of this organization. He uses conventional therapies where warranted, but usually as a last resort. I just returned from there for Weezie to have her rabies vaccination. She was pronounced healthy at age 10+.

It was interesting on this visit. I guess they have instituted a "wellness" program that the vet tech was pushing me hard on. Asking about when I'd had the last distemper, etc. I suggested that she look at the records, as she had all of them in front of her. I did not say much, just to suggest that we were taking a more holistic approach to Weezie's care that's why I was seeing this particular vet. I noticed when he did the paperwork, much of the conventional shots, etc, were all crossed out, with a note "no more". Not sure if that's because of her age, or what.

And as a side light, I also have taken a much more holistic approach to my own health. As a result, the usual week long cold/flu that I normally would get in the winter, never arrived! Not sure if it's because of the holistic approach, but it was nice not to be sick.

Thanks for this, Peter.

It has also been my experience that as I learn to better care for my Newfs, I am learning how to better look after myself and my health is definitely better for it.

Great read.....We need more of it here in Australia..we have a few great vets, but they are very much in the minority and looked down on.......We have the great Ian Bidstrup nearby, who is world renown for all his efforts. So much so he is usually away teaching :( and hard to get into.

I do agree with Hannah, have found i survive the "cold and flue" season much better too nowadays, due to care taken, like with the dogs. And I work in the health industry where everyone is sick.

We all (dogs and humans) take the same stuff in the morning  All the vitamins, fish oil, glucosamine, kelp etc etc :)

Mine is Bach flower essences. My vet put weezie on Star of Bethlehem when mudji died for the trauma, and I started taking different ones about the same time. Still take them today, and am better for it.
