Soft Stool

Anyone else finds their Newfie has soft stool. My 8 month old girl has always had somewhat soft stool but I noticed that after giving her treats with high protein it gets even softer. It took lots of research and trial and error but I finally figured out too much protein (in food OR treats) gives her soft stool. But I'm concern, doesn't she need the protein for her growing muscles?

Some will say too much protein causes too rapid growth and possible issues later in life. Could it be the protein source? Snuffles can have soft stool if too much organ meat. Maybe try a fish based treat if you are using a poultry/red meat treat. Gotta read ingredients. Amazing how much poultry stuff is used.

Thank you for the reply. I am currently switching her to NutriSource (the fish formula) and she is going doing great. Her stool has harden and she seems to really enjoy it. Maybe I got a fish loving dog.

You did not mention when her last stool check for ova and parasites was. Just because you got her stool to firm up does not mean she's free of parasites. She should get checked by your vet clinic for rounds, whips, hooks, giardia, and especially coccidia. Giardia and coccidia are sometimes missed on the first check so another is a good idea since loose stools have been constant.

Yes, thank you. She was checked for parasites and they did not find anything.

I just took her swimming this weekend and she got the soft stool after she had been swimming for a while. I have noticed with her, the more activity she has the more likely it will be for her to have soft stool. She is fine after her activity level has dropped. She had been getting better because now I can have her fetch for 10 minutes without her having soft stool. But heavy swimming seems to be making her have soft stools.

Does she swim in the ocean? If so, does she inhale some of the salt water? My guys get soft poop after swimming in the ocean here.

Try cutting her portions down a little or feeding it in three meals a day .too much food all at once can cause softer stools.

She does swim in the ocean. Maybe it's the water, I will have to see if she does it at home after playing a game of fetch.
