Slippers for old ladies?

I guess this is the thread to ask this question as Gracie will soon be 12. She's doing pretty well but arthritic hips are giving her trouble. She is on a pain/inflammatory med for that, but she slips a lot on the floors or any smooth surface now. We have throw rugs all over the place and sometimes I feel like Sir Walter Raleigh because I have to lay down a towel or anything fabric to convince her it's safe to walk. Then she gathers her courage and makes a dash over the "offending" surface. I was wondering if anyone has used those gripper-type booties for their dogs and if so did they work and did your dog tolerate them? She definitely wants to go for her walks outdoors but she doesn't like the porch surface either. Anything for my old grande dame.

Yes, we used them for Dexter and they worked wonderfully for him. He did take them off occasionally and we would have to convince him to let us put them back on...I would definitely get them when our dogs get to be a senior.

I know when we baby sat Apache (Snuffles' half brother/cousin) a couple of weeks ago, he came with some human kid/baby foot product since his home is no carpet, but since Snuffles blew his CCL last Sept, we live/eat/sleep in the carpeted living room now, so I never used them. I can find out what Karen uses if you want.

Thanks, Leonard, That would be so kind of you.

There's a thread somewhere...no idea which category, but several of us have the same nonslip shoes. SAm's are by UltraPaws...they are called durable dog boots. They provide excellent traction even with just the two rear shoes on. Yorkville Newfie has some for Mila, too.

Elvis wears the Ultra Paws as well and they're fantastic on our tile/laminate/wood floors. They're slippery outside if the grass is wet, though.

I don't remember what Dexter's was but we got them at PetSmart....they had really good grips to them and were made of fleece...you could wash them in machine also.

This may not work for you, but we found a harness for Finn that helped him tremendously. It is very well made. Easily adjusted for a perfect fit and padded appropriately to prevent pressure points. He quickly learned to wait for a hand up from the floor or a steadying hold over difficult terrain. Made a big difference with our hardwood floors and our upstairs bedroom. The old codger just wouldn't relax at night if we weren't all in our usual places upstairs.

The harness gave him back a lot of mobility confidence. But of course it only helps if someone is there to give a hand. Finn was rarely alone in his old age. The harness wouldn't be much help for Gracie if she needs to move over treacherous footing when nobody is around.

Thanks. We do have a sling to help her rise if she's having trouble. It's more the issue of walking on smooth surfaces and rising from a smooth spot if no one is there.

I use 24 month Skidders, Meijers has them on clearance in the shoe department if they have any left. I've also been able to find some at good prices on ebay.

We also have the ultra paws. WE take them off when she goes outside though as her grip is better without them outside. Inside they seem to help a lot.
