Help! Our Boagie is a compulsive over eater. It does not matter what it is. If it is in reach she grabs it. Anything from Kitty kibble to entire loaves of rustic bread (a true favorite, no butter required) to the cat.
I have tried doing the can with pennies both with me shaking as well as stratigically placed so it would fall when she steals the food. She does not care. It is all food all day all the time.
Her last little binge got her into trouble. She ate almost an entire thing of liver sausage... whole, package and all. I could not figure out what happend to it until she vomitted the empty package on to my bed  . She continued to be ill for 2 more days which lead to a trip to the vet, no food for 24 hours and a shot of tagamet. Then she continued to expel pieces of plastic for the next day.
Any advise would be grately appreciated

I have been having the same problem with Sam. My vet said thyroid can cause hunger. I would get it checked if I were you. Although this is not Sam's case because she has had low thyroid for a year now and on medication.

We feed a mix of Wellness and Costco Kirkland brand both are less then 23% protien. She gets about a cup and a half in the morning and a cup and a half in the evening. We both work and are not home for an afternoon meal. I am nervous of feeding her too much becuase i don't want her to grow to quickly. She will be 5 months on the first and already weighs 68 pounds. All of her litter mates are about the same weight, give or take 1 to 5 pounds.

Maybe it's a puppy thing. Bryce just turned 4 months old, eats three cups a day, and wants to eat everything in site and he weighs 46 pounds. We won't increase the food just yet because he gets a lot of treats while training, walking, and other good things he does. Heck just the other day he thought the cat's head just might be good for a taste! :D Before we could give the "Leave it" command, the cat's head was totally emmersed in his mouth. Cat was none too happy about it. He wasn't hurting her, just wanted to mouth her. LOL! Poor kitty. Had all sorts of shiney slimes all over her pretty groomed head, and amazingly she didn't knock him silly.
I've been wondering if it is a puppy thing because human babies go through a stage where the world is investigated by mouth. What if pups are the same? And of course if it's edible, it'll get eaten. Gee, in some cases it'll get eaten even if it's not edible given half a chance!

I have heard puppies explore everything with their mouths. so maybe that is it. after all, all she eats is not necesarilly edible.
About the Cat.. for the cat's sake if you can check the mouthing now, do it. Poor Edgar and Ichiro are constantly beeing dragged across the floor by their ears.
Ichi seems to enjoy it ( hes a little wierd) but soon Eggy will put Baogie in her place.. I just pray it won't require stitches.

Dogger, if she's getting 3 cups a day of wellness, that's fine, but if kirkland is not made of quality components, like Wellness, then it's just plain not enough for her. Protein count aside, if it's corn based or has lesser quality ingredients, she's hungry because she's not getting enough minerals, vitamins, etc. Check your ingredients against the Wellness and see what you think. Lesser amounts of the high quality foods like Wellness are all she needs to thrive, but if Kirkland has fillers in it, she needs twice as much of it.

No worries there! Bryce knows the "Leave It" and he's not allowed to chase the kitties. Just that he's a puppy and just really can't help the temptation. :D He does real good though and we just keep reminding him!

Mollysmom,
thank you for the suggestion about comparing the 2 brands. I did not even think of that. She also gets a bit of yogart and hip action tabs plus vitamins 2xs a day.
What about other brands of food? what are other well rounded products? There is somewhat of a fad around here to purchase fresh home made dog food. Any thoughts on that?

i agree with mollysmom.
i do see hunger in my pups even after eating, wich i believe is just a trait.
they get enough food
a suggestion.
i feed wysong the synorgen brand and mix the canned meat in with it.
http://www.wysong.net.
good luck with whatever brand you choose.
if you can try giving some veggies during the day to help curb the hunger, and it wouldnt hurt to sneak a snack in at the noon hour if you can.

Hi Dogger,

Wellness is my number one choice dog food. Other good foods are Wysong, as stated by Sar, Eagle Pack, California Natural, ....

Why not just give her 3 to 4 1/2 cups of Wellness? It's excellent food. And as Sar says, I give pieces of veggies all day long to keep the tummies full when I'm trying to reduce weight on one of mine. They don't have time to digest those veggies and they pass through but they serve their purpose - crunchie and filling. Try pieces of brocolli, cauliflour, sweet potato, carrots (mine love the baby carrots). I give them apples, peaches, bananas (not as many). All are good for them.

Linda is right about the veggies, Jake is only getting 3 cups of wellness a day now but I buy the frozen mixed veggies and he gets those all through the day I just take them out of the freezer and dump them in his dish he loves them.

Thanks for the veggie idea. i gave carrots as a snack this weekend. and if nothing else they kept her from chewing on the cat. This morning I did cooked carrots mixed in with her food. Plus her non fat blueberry yogart. I have to say it looked awful but she ate it... Now I have to add after i made the dogs breakfast I went to make french toast for Brian and I... No bread. just the plastic bag under the dining room table. Someone must have had a snack while I was out last night.
I plan on trying frozen Brocoli and I heard from someone at my barn that yams are a big hit.. In moderation, no brown sugar or marshmellows.
