Shave and a haircut...two bits!

Just brought Bear back from his yearly shaving to cut out all the old, dead fur so a new coat can grow in for the Spring. He hates me. Nani just finished the rinsing bath we gave her and the mud residue in the tub is not to be believed! Anyway, these are two of my "kids" - 11 year old chow, Bear & 13 1/2 week old Newf, Nani.

Here are my two kittens, Cairo and Menes (pronounced "mee-nies") while I'm at it.

Well I like your cats best! I've kind of got fond of cats since I have one.

Just kidding, all your kids are great. Although I don't think your chow is in his best suit just now

Oh my gosh!! Tooo darn cute!! All of them! Great pics Kanela. Thanks so much for sharing!

(It looks almost as though Nani is reaching for Bear's paw like a human would reach for another's hand for reassurance. She even looks like she's thinking, "Bear, what's mom doing now? Watch her closely. I think she's lost it. Bear, don't let her give me another bath! Please!!") Hee!
Sooo cute!

Oh believe me, the kittens have more mischief in them than both dogs put together!

Nani has grown by leaps and bounds and sometimes Bear's like, "Hey...where did my little baby sister go?
" He's used to being the Big Man of the House.

Wonder what he'll think next year?

Thank you, HPond - I think so, too!
He hurrumph'd around the house a bit but when I brought out the big guns, SWEDISH MEATBALLS, he forgave me instantly! LOL

Thank you, Bridget! I'll take new photos of Nani tomorrow since that's when she turns 14 weeks. I'm trying to chronicle her growth weekly so I can monitor her weight gain and size. It'll also be great to look back at how "little" she was after she's full grown and can barely fit in the living room.

And thank you, everyone, for the nice compliments. It's always nice to hear how pretty your kids are even when they don't always look their best.

Beautiful "kids" all of them. I'm partial to tabby cats myself since I have one - also a rescue from the Humane Society. Don't know what she will do when we get a Newf but I'm sure everyone will adjust.

Cheers,

Great pictures of the both of them. Nani's expression is priceless. Bear looks real handsome. Do Newfies get shaved too?

Beautiful kids, Kanela! We used to have our Mocha shaved at least once a year. She had a chronic bad coat and bouts of hot spots, and she seemed a lot more comfortable with the shorter coat. I'm hoping that Suki won't have to be shaved, though...I think she's gonna be a pretty girl, and her coat seems a lot healthier than Mocha's ever was at that age(almost 5 months). Take care.

Brenda, I think Newfies only get shaved when they absolutely HAVE to. My Chow's a different story, though. I swear he's got a triple coat because here you've got the top layer (long guard hairs), then you've got the thick undercoat, THEN you've got this layer that looks and feels exactly like wool. I've broken more than a few combs over the years grooming him.

Also, he's getting along in years and his coat doesn't seem to be able to shed off and re-grow like it once did. Mochaspa has it right, sometimes they feel much more comfortable with it short. And Bear also used to get the itchy hotspots until my vet prescribed a wonderful medicated shampoo with Benzoyl. That and the shaving has provided great relief to my boy.

Kanela, thank you
for letting me know that Newfie's don't have to get shaved down. Kodi has a standing appt at the groomers every 8 weeks, but gets brushed out regularly.
