Senior Dog Prayer

This was posted today to a area Basset Hound Rescue List I am on since I help with transport now and then. I figured it belonged here too.

Below is today's blog post from gspotsylvania - the author is Ginny Phillips. Ginny is active in basset rescue in Virginia/Maryland area and shares her "basset plantation" with her husband, five basset hounds and one doxie-mix.

Lord grant me the patience to love my senior dog.
Remind me that peepee happens, as does that other stuff.
Remind me that senility takes many forms:
Sometimes grouchiness
Sometimes forgetfulness.

Lord Grant me the wisdom and courage to let him go
When his time has come
Remind me this is an unselfish act and that there
Is no room for selfishness when you love an old dog.

Lord remind me that it is in my power to make sure
He suffers not a moment of pain or of fear,
That he undergoes no unnecessary procedures or surgeries,
That I do not seek to extend his life because I cannot let go.

And if you should see fit, Lord,
To have him not just wake up one morning,
I am ok with that, the final gift he gives to me
After a lifetime of love – a gentle passing
