Many of you probably remember my post about the Airedale that my sister-in-law was sending to live with my new hubby and me.... and how I wasn't sure if it would get along with Ben and Scooter.....
Jeff brought him home last night. We took the ol' fellow to the vet for a thorough checkup this afternoon, and discovered he was in acute kidney failure. In addition he had such a raging ear infection (treated over the past few months but somehow worse) that the vet couldn't even see inside his ear canal. The vet said it would require surgery to get in there and clean out the ear and open the swollen, inflamed, deformed passages, but Scooby would never survive the surgery due to his kidney condition.
Additionally, Scooby had been licking at a hot spot in the past few weeks that turned out to be a bad bacterical skin infection. His temp was extremely elevated too.
The vet gently suggested euthanasia as a humane option. Jeff and I, who thought we were taking Scooby in for a routine physical, were devastated. The vet explained the pain Scooby must be in, and how ill he felt, and we made the painful decision to have him put down then and there. We don't regret it - we are beating ourselves up over how we didn't catch all these problems, or at least realize the severity of them. I can't stop crying over him. He wasn't my dog - yet - but I wish we could have done something for him.
We even had a grooming appointment for Scooby tomorrow.
Anyway, this was a wonderful gentlemanly dog, and I know he would appreciate your best thoughts as he joins our friends across the bridge. He was only 8 years old.
Good boy, Scooby. Good dog.
