Susie,
SAS is SubAortic Stenosis- a heart condition found in Newfs that is considered genetic. In SAS, there is a thickening of the wall of the aorta which narrows the aorta allowing less blood to pass thru. Newfs will usually die from severe cases but can survive with extremely mild cases. Surgery has not worked with the few that have had it done experimentally. SAS is considered a developmental disease in that the aorta is supposedly normal at birth and develops as the dog ages. Most cases of SAS will be present by the time puppies are 10-11 weeks old which is why cardiologists prefer to see pups at that age and not sooner. Additional problem is that dogs that are clear of SAS can still produce offspring with it. It is a polygenic mode of inheritance and you never know when you are going to get a "heart puppy" with it.
PS is pulmonic stenosis. Genetics of it is unknown. PS is a thickening of the pulmonic blood vessel wall restricting blood flow. A dog has a better chance of living with PS than SAS for some reason.
