Some of you may have heard already through facebook but others may not have.
We lost our girl this morning. From was I was told it was "bloat" but I was told it didn't include her stomach.

She didn't have any gagging, throwing up, no hardened stomach, and no typical symptoms of bloat.

She was fine, we brought the dogs in from outside and at about 1am we saw Miley lethargic in her crate when we went downstairs.

My boyfriend opened the door and she just laid there, wouldn't get up.
We got her up but she laid back down and looked uncomfortable, not labored breathing or anything, just lethargic.

I told my boyfriend we should bring her to the Emergency Vet immediately.

We rushed her the 25 minutes to the emergency vet and they took her in right away. We had to carry her in and they carried her around back.

The vet came out and said he was almost positive it was a closed Pyro and she needed emergency spay surgery.

He did more tests (she had fluid in her chest cavity or stomach.. i don't remember word for word). He said there was no bacteria in the fluid but that something with the glucose.

She was in shock, cold, body temp 92 or 94. They put her on 2 IV catheters and couldn't get a blood pressure until after 2 bags of fluids.

They could hardly get the catheters in as well.

He told us that to stabilize her would be $3000 and then the surgery to spay her would be $8000.

He said she would need this as soon as she's stable.

I called one of my vets that's an hour and 1/2 away because they have great prices and an on staff overnight vet capable of doing the surgery and stabilizing her.

They quoted me $1000 for the same procedure. They finished up the tests at the emergency vet, finished up fluids, taped up her catheters, put her in heated blankets and with heated water jugs, and brought her out on a gurney.

I stayed in the back with her holding her the whole way there, while having the heat on high blast.

We got there, put her in a kennel and she perked up. They said they would call when she was stable for surgery while they ran more tests/blood work/etc.

We rented a motel and headed over there (4am) 3miles from the vet. We got a call around 6am that she was doing amazingly better and was ready for surgery.

I was so happy and hopeful.

I got a call 10 minutes later and the vet told me her uterus looked fine, no pyro.

BUT all of her intestine (90% of her small intestine all the way up to the artery) was dead.

I was in shock. I didn't know what to say, I didn't know what to do.

She asked if I heard of bloat and I told her yes, we have a bloat chart on our fridge so we all recognize the symptoms.

It wasn't her stomach that twisted, it was her intestine.

She said there was nothing they could do, removing the intestine would cause a fatal bleed and she would not make it.

They said she had to be euthanized.

My heart sunk and I was in shock. This is more painful than when my first dog had gotten bloat.

She was my special baby and I literally have a heartache from all of this.

I'm having trouble believing she won't be back through our doors, and back in bed with me.

I have been in bed crying all day. I just don't know how this could happen.

We were diligent about not letting them eat and run, drink and run, etc and we are always aware of the symptoms.

She didn't have a hard distended stomach, she wasn't throwing up, gagging, or anything I am still in shock.

So I lost my baby today, my best friend. I just don't know how I'm going to live without her in my life.

RIP Miley

I am going to talk with the vets tomorrow and find out what happened, how this could have happened, and how she was misdiagnosed at the first vet as having pyro when in fact she did not.

If anyone has ever heard of this type of "bloat" please feel free to tell me. I'm very confused and heartbroken right now.

I'm so sorry to hear about sweet Miley. My heart breaks for you Elana.

I've never heard of it either. And to think that the ER Vet misdiagnosed her so badly makes me ill.

Please let us know what the Vets have to say.

Godspeed Miley.

I am so sorry and shocked that this happened.

When you talk to the vet tomorrow, ask if it could have been Intussusception. That is where the bowel turns in on itself and the blood supply gets turned off causing the bowel to die.

I am so so sorry for your loss...
If I remember correctly Miley had surgery to remove something from her stomach, I wonder if something could have gone wrong then and taken this long to surface?
I'm sure you have so many questions right now... I hope you get some answers...

Firstly I am so very sorry for your loss..it is tragic, so young

Now it sounds like it could possibly have been intercusception, which causes a intestinal type bloat. It can be reversed if found early by X-rays. they give the dog quite a large amount of barium via Enema. the fluid is given at a certain pressure and a certain amount rapidly to reverse the problem..Some now also do it with air. I have had this happen to a dog many years ago and was lucky to work in a Radiology department, I know what had to happen to fix it...And had help from our Radiologist. But if it was not that it could have been a bowel only twist, which are rare and they are sometimes repaired surgically if caught early.....X-ray/CT can diagnose some of these if taken early.
I think it is sad , but these things do happen.......Again, I am sorry :( Ronnie
