I just got off the phone with the vet.
She said Miley had Mesenteric Torsion
They don't know what causes it. They said that some studies say Pancreas not working properly could have been linked to it.
Current Foreign body surgery if it were more recent (but Mileys was about a year ago)
Any inflamed intestine.
She said nothing in her intestine made her worry that it was a foreign body or something she ate.
This one is same as boating and torsion but different signs. She said that this type of torsion present very very suddenly and if the emergency vet hadn't given her fluids immediately when she arrived, she would have died very soon after I got her there.
In the ultra sound it just looks like dilated loops. Loops of uteris and intestine dialated would have looked the same so that would account for the mix up in diagnosis.
Before surgery they did x-ray and another ultrasound but even then it didn't look like twisted intestine, it looked like it could have been either a uterus or intestine.
When you look at the x-ray, there were parts of her belly that look like it was her uterus that looked dilated and other times it looked like the intestine looked dilated.
Even with both ultrasound and x-ray they couldn't tell what was going on.
She said that there is very little research done on this and it's because most people don't catch it in time and just find their dog when he/she passes away at home, so a lot goes misdiagnosed.
I was looking this up last night and saw that it's virtually impossible to save a dog from this and has a survival rate of 2-5%. I asked the vet about this and she said the majority of the cases where the dogs are saved is because they are rushed in and it's found doing exploratory surgery.
They did take photos of her when they were operating to document this. They said they can send them if I wanted and if it won't traumatize me and I asked them to send them. They are also sending the x-rays.
She said there's nothing that can be done to prevent it like you can get a dog a gastropexy for normal bloat. She did recommend I get my other two pexy'd though, which I wanted to do anyway.
All in all, that's it. I am just still shocked that this happened.
If anyone wants to see the images or x-rays for any reason just PM me and when I get them, I will forward them. If this experience can help someone else in the long run, I will do what I can to help.
