Recommended Books for training

I am looking for recommendations on books we should pick up that might aid us in the training of our new puppy. My wife and I have read a few titles but were looking for other's suggestions. We plan on using a positive reinforcement training method. Any help would be great!

Sure, I'm a dog book junkie!
Karen Pryor's "Don't Shoot the Dog" is the textbook for clicker training as I understand, so that's very slanted towards positive reinforcement. It's excellent, and a really fun read, though it's theory rather than practice. It isn't really about dogs, it's about how to train anything.
"The Art of Raising a Puppy" by the Monks of New Skete is another favorite of mine. You probably won't follow their methods exactly because they do use a moderate amount of correction, but the book is beautifully written, they clearly love and understand dogs, and they have pretraining bonding exercises that are very useful.
Also, Judi Adler's "The Newfoundland Puppy: Early Care Early Training" has a detailed course to follow for training puppies, and it's all positive reinforcement. We worked through a good bit of it with Ajax and had great success with it. I think her website has been posted on Newf-net before, though I don't know what it is. It's a vanity press...you have to order directly from the author.
Those are my three favorites.

If you have kids, a short book I found very helpful was Brian Kilcommons "How to Childproof your Dog". I think I have the title right, my sister borrowed it for getting her lab used to a baby in the house. It's not a complete training guide but it was great for things like training the dog which toys are hers.

Judi Adlers newfy puppy book is great! We still refer back to it as it has tons of imformation about the breed and training tips from puppy to adult also lots of imfo about water training to carting etc. Love this book and we also started reading it before we brought her home!
Congrats. by the way and welcome to newfnet!

I agree with everyone else about Judi Adler's book. I also like Ian Dunbar - he has a book called "Before You
Get Your Puppy" and another called "After You Get Your Puppy." (Covers all the bases! ;) ) Both have info about getting started once the puppy is in your home.
I need to reread MY puppy books - just got news that the baby I've been waiting for has been born and if all goes well will be coming this spring!

Thanks for all of your suggestions! I am going to give Judi's book a try for starters. We have already gone through the book, "Newfoundlands" by Joanna Kosloff, 1996. Our breeder gave the book to us as a good starting point. You can never read too many books! We'll keep you posted on our training successes and stumbling blocks.
