Raw Feeding

Does anyone have any raw feeding books around they don't use and would like to sell? Does anyone have any recommendations as to any books (about raw) they really liked?

Dawn,
I recommend this one. I don't personally have it but those I've recommended it to that got it, loved it.

It's a shame you're not on FB. The author of this book has a FB page called "The Holistic Newfoundland" and she is absolutely wonderful.

But, here is her personal website:

Kymythy's book is great and thorough. i have been doing RAW since 1989.it was due to finances. We lived on a farm and were broke due to drought and lack of work...use what you have for the dogs, plenty of cows and sheep, eggs, veggies and fruit.i just fed everything including whole rabbit which are a problem and vermin here in Australia. All cost us nothing.my dogs looked better, less vet visits, good ears, no skin problems except with rescue dogs that were new..So now we just keep on doing it...You cannot go wrong with RAW...and you dog will love you forever for the change. if you are on FB, I go under Ronnie Taft

Kymythy's book was and still is a huge help to me with the raw feeding. Very easy reading and easy to understand. Definitely purchase it. You will like it.

Thanks friends.....we are roughly two weeks into it and notice a difference in her itching pattern. Vince is amazed!!! We attempted to put chicken (quarters w/bone) into her diet (We've tried once before and I think she has a texture issue with it) and she shows some resistants but we will continue slowly and I've become a incognito member of FB :) Ahh, the learning curves of life.....but I'm sure we'll get there with a little help from our friends ;) I'll keep you posted as we are knee deep in her season in a week or two! Thanks for the encouragement!

So glad to hear you are having success with Myra's skin issues, Dawn.

We are just starting looking into the raw thing as we will be making the switch in the near future and are trying to figure everything out. Facebook is a great resource! I was a holdout until just recently but there really is a bunch of great info out there. Hope to see you there, too!

Ok, how did you convince Vin? My husband has the vision of salmonella drool all over the house...

How did you start? We had Indy blood tested for allergies and she has come back allergic to most protein sources: chicken, beef, fish, can't remember them all right now. We have her on a limited ingredient food that is Venison & Sweet Potato.

How I convinced him to at least try a little was, I took out the pile of vet bills with all the history & logs we've kept in regards to her and said you have 3 choices....take your pick!

1) I'm going to the Holistic vet today to sit down and discuss Myra. Not sure what she'll charge other than her $280 fee for the first visit and then we can go from there.

2) I'm going to see the Dermatologist at Garden State Vet today and I'm bringing all the files and that cost is $155 just for me to sit with her a discuss Myra and we can go from there

3) We can try the raw for one month and see if we have any improvements

#1 & #2 will cost you money & #3 won't cost you a penny, I'll take care of it.

He feeds the dogs and he's, shall we say OCD about everything he does, so he knows the area will be clean when he's done, and he won't let me do it cause otherwise he'd go insane. He's never worried about the drool having issues, so shhhh don't mention that to him! To be honest he's actually more worried about the poop in the yard contamination.

What was bad was we had my parents stay with them last weekend and our dishwasher was dirty but my mom thought it was clean and put everything away...so we spent Sunday evening cleaning everything

I would like to go raw but have a fear of not meeting their nutritional needs. My DH doesn't want to increase the cost of feeding them. Our kibble now is $97 for a large bag and then add the cost of canned fish, pumpkin and green beans they get each meal. I think we are so close to going raw but I need that last push to make the switch. Neither of the dogs have allergies (knock on wood) and seem healthy. How much more expensive is it to feed raw?

It really depends on where you live and what sources may be available to you. I found a co-op...and, a local supplier as well as a butcher. For me....it's cheaper than buying commercial dog food. It costs me about $140 a month to feed (2) adult Newfs.

Thanks for sharing that. It helps. I just asked my DH how often we buy kibble and it's almost two bags per month. We are already spending $200 per month just for kibble. Include all the canned fish, green beans and pumpkin and it really adds up!

Now I guess I have to do more research about what resources are available in our area.

In my case add in vet bills for her allergy issues and every year and you don't want to know the number (and I won't add it cause I don't want to know either) but I just think and have always thought that getting back to basics is always better and healthier even with humans. Stop with the processed foods, it's killing us slowly. I just feel like I've been on a conveyer belt with these allergies and I'm ready to get off...I bet Myra is too, her life is hell for 3 to 4 months a year and it's just not fair
