Raised dishes

Hi all,

Was just wondering what everyone thought about raised dishes. I've heard from many people that they help and I've heard from others that they don't do anything at all. My little guy is still too young for this (15 weeks and 25 pounds), but I just thought I'd ask for the future.

Thanks

I just got the NCA lifestyle (I think it's called) puppy information email, and in it says not to use raised bowls because, contrary to popular opinion, they can INCREASE the chance of bloat. I'll try to find the document in a bit, when I have a little more time. :)

We raised their water bowl mainly because Turner has an ANNOYING habit of putting his paw in his water bowl and we didn't like the added clean up. Raising them has put an end to that and we love it. We have considered raising their food bowls because Turner is so tall it looks uncomfortable when he is eating.

Found it! The entire document is here: http://online.ncarescue.info/rpc/lifestages/Issue1/GearingUpForPuppy.pdf

It's from Lifestages Issue 1, 2 months:

"Be advised that when shopping for bowls you may still encounter claims that larger dogs are best fed from raised bowls. While that used to be the conventional wisdom, at least one important study has suggested this could in fact encourage the likelihood of bloat (a condition in which the stomach fills with gas and twists; it’s usually fatal unless emergency treatment is given in time), so ground-level feeding has again become the recommended practice."

I really don't think anyone knows. My beloved Nicholas died of complications from bloat last July. I have never raised their bowls and he was the first and I hope only one to suffer that way out of 7 Newfoundlands over a 25 year period.

I think if the dog is going to bloat, it will bloat. Nic was raised like all the other Newfs I have had with the same type of food, kibble, he was a slow eater. None are/were allowed exercise for at least 1 1/2 hour afterwards.

I have had newfies since the 1980's and i have never had a raised bowl..........I have been lucky so far and have only ever had one bloat episode (not required treatment) so far.And it was a stress related episode

I have three giant breeds. One eats from raised bowl the other two do not. None of them seem to have any issues. I did have to get a slow feeder for my male as he gobbles food.

Hagrid has had adjustable raised bowls since quite young, he looks comfortable
when eating or drinking. He eats very slowly just like the gentle giant he is.
