Question for you raw food experts

So Maggie has been on primarily salmon based homemade diet for almost 2 years now and has been doing well. She lost some weight initially (which was good) then maintained for a long time. Then she lost a few more lbs and is now underweight (she's about 80lbs right now). Some of this is muscle loss in her hind end, but she still needs to put on about 10 pounds.

Long story short, the vet would like us to increase her protein and add some other fats.

For protein, we want to try adding chicken. She cannot have any very hard bones due to her mouth surgery, so I think there are some good options with chicken?

We could also do ground? I need a rather economical option though.

What chicken parts would be good to try?

There is a sticky in the food and diet forum for Satin Balls. They are great to put weight on a dog.

I feed chicken regularly. Either I will buy a whole bird and chop it up and they eat the whole thing bones and all or I buy the chicken legs with backs attached, which are usually cheaper/go on sale more often. They can eat all the bones because they are so soft. To avoid issues try and feed it as large as possible (i.e. don't cut it up too small). Then they are forced to chomp through the bones. I also remove all skin from the chicken.

Could you mince the chicken up as then she is getting the bone and meat content and it may be gentler after her mouth surgery.

I like this idea for weight gain, and you have the choice of cooking at first, then going a little raw, then to raw, it's not a bad transition.

I sent this to the vet to see what she has to say (we'll have to modify a little bit for her allergies).

I also picked up some ground chicken necks yesterday and added a little to her dinner. She thought it was awesome. She is loving her new diet plan with 2 meals and 3 snacks a day!
