Puppy food

Hello all,

I was wondering what everyone thinks about "all life stages" type foods. I have a baby newf, and I was thinking about putting him on costco's food. There is no large breed food though, so I'd have to supliment some things. What are everyone's thoughts?

My pups have done well on that food, so it is a reasonable choice. But, as Angela said, what did your breeder recommend?

I know it's not a great food, but she likes it because she has been on it for a long time with her personal dogs, but said I can feed whatever is like to. I called my vet's office and the vet tech told me to feed pedigree, and I called her an idiot.

I like the Kirkland brand because it seems like a decent quality at a very good price, just not sure about what to do because it isn't large breed food.

large breed doesn't really cut it...these are giant breeds and no on e really makes giant breed food. A good adult food should be your goal. Puppy foods can encourage accelerated growth and you DO NOT want that. Giant breeds are slow growers, and for besst skeletal health, should be encouraged to grow slowly. Good luck, there are really quite a few good foods out there, finding one that is cost effective, tasty, non allergenic, no cheap fillers, etc, and easy to locate in your area make it a little more challenging.

We use the Nature's Domain salmon and sweet potato from Costco since we brought our guy home, and he's done very well on it. He actually has a very sensitive tummy, and this is one of the few things that doesn't upset him. His growth has also been great - very slow and measured. While it may not work for everyone, it has been great for us.

That's what I had been shooting for. A friend of mine shows mastiffs and she said that the best thing to do is to do an all life stages or an adult food. The vet disagreed with me and said I really needed a puppy food. Everywhere I look it seems like there are different opinions on this.

Vets have little knowledge of food requirements for giant breed dogs. If you go with an adult food or all life stages food, you will be fine.

I used a high end all stage food, recommended by the breeder, for my Berner until she was 4 years old and starting exhibiting sensitivities to that particular formula. Regardless of her later allergy issues it kept her puppy weight down and her growth rate steady.

Ultimately, you need to find something that works for your puppy and you.

Good luck and enjoy that baby!

Thanks guys! So I think I'll put him on the costco brand and every so often given him boiled chicken breast for the extra protein and put him on some supliments for joints.

A newf pup should not have added protein. Giving him chicken is fine but don't feel you need to add protein to his diet.

Okay, how does everyone feel about supliments? Now I'm seeing that they don't do as much as some would like is to believe? I want my puppy to be healthy and don't mind spending the money, but I'd rather spend it wisely.

Our Thor is now just over 5 months old, we are doing for food as our breeder told us and has been doing for 30 years. We feed twice a day the following, 1 cup of Hollistic Select Giant Breed Puppy Oatmeal and Lamb, a quarter patty of raw chicken Bravo Brand, a vitamin c powder and glucosomine ftablet rom Springtime, we also mix in a cup or so of ground celery, kale and romaine lettuce combination. Every once and a while we throw in a large spoonful of pumpkin. He gets weighed every week and he has consisantly gained 3 pounds each week. He also gets homemade treats as part of his training.

He is lean with no fat, as he gets a daily and hearty rib check. (The big rub of good boy when he follws a command correctly!) Anyway this works for us, you just need to find what works well for you.
