Puppy Bedding

I have a Saint friend who uses cedar chips for her puppy bedding. She swears by it and won't use anything else. Have any of you used this with any success? I've always shied away from it because I was worried it would pose a choking hazard for the pups and the dust from it may irritate their lungs. Perhaps I'm a little overly cautious but what can I say, I'm a worrier when it comes to my pups.

I've always used newspaper on the bottom of the whelping box or in the x pen for them when they're older. Of course I top those with nice grippy (is that even a word?) blankets so they're not slip sliding away.

The cedar chips would definetely impart a nice aroma and the clean up would be easy but at what cost??

a lot of people I know use a mix of wood shavings and shredded paper as puppy bedding.

personally i prefer the paper -less risk

The potential hazards you mentioned plus the stuff getting stuck in the fur keeps me using newspaper. I try to get the end of the rolls from the newspaper before the ink is used.

Thanks!! Great idea about using the end rolls, Ginny. I'll have to stop by my local newspaper place and see if I can get them. Another great thing about using newspapers is they're cheap! 25 cents gets you an absolutely enormous stack of papers. Plus often times all the flyers and coupon booklets are in there so I save even more money;)

I use towels or blankets and it has worked well. It is easier to just wash them than to always be buying and replacing and throwing out litter or papers.

have you tried using some shredded paper as we shred all our unwanted paperwork and then it either goes on the allotment in the vegetable beds or my friend uses it as litter

Shredded paper would stick all over them. DON'T use the pellets that expand when wet. I heard about a pup who ate some, obstructed, and died!

My local H&R block gave me 4 huge bags of shredded paper for my last litter. It's still in the garage, unused.

I think I'll just stick with my usual blankets and newspaper bedding:shuffle:

In the puppy area (living room), we cover the floor with tarpaulin. Then add a layer of newspaper, then add a layer of TENA bed pads, then add a layer of bathroommats (http://www.hillcroftnorthwest.com/images/j.jpg non-slip, washable, with small holes so the pee will be absorbed by the underneath TENA and will not wet the mattress). Then on top some larger softer matts if we want to. Sounds complicated by works really, really, really well. Change the newspapers and Tena's once a day for the whole area and 2-3x/d for the "pee corner". Wash the mattresses when we change the underneath. They dry in about 8hours so we have 2 sets for the area that we swap.

I bought my own paper shredder and shred papers by the garbage bag full when I have a Winter litter and the puppies have to stay in the house longer then they would in nice weather.
