Problems with food staying in!

I am hoping someone can help. I have a 13 week old newf named Odin. He absolutely loves to eat and eat super fast to the point I had to buy him a slow-eat bowl. This only slows him slightly! My breeder told me that he was eating the Taste of the Wild salmon for puppies, so this is what he has been on for the 3 weeks hes been home with me. The problem is, he will have anywhere from
8-12 bowel movements a day! Is this normal? I have tried adding some chicken and rice to his food and at first it seemed better, but now we are back to the same issue. He has been to the vet twice and checked for worms, giardia, and one other test, cant remember the name and all is good there.
Please if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do, I would very much appreciate it as would Odin!
, :dance01:, :ah:

Pumpkin can add fiber and help with stool issues. Not the pumpkin pie mix real pumpkin.
I also have used Metamucil (or any fiber powder) to the food. I sprinkle the powder over the food using the dosage for a 12 yr old to adult.

Have you tried putting his food in a muffin tin? Sprinkle a bit of food in each holder and he has to eat much slower.

How often are you feeding him and how much at a time?
Yes, how much and how often. Also, how much does he weigh at 13 weeks old.

Sounds a bit like you are over feeding, but don't know until we find out.

I feed him only 3 times a day, and I give him aprox. 1 1/3 cup each meal.
He weighs 28 lbs right now. Someone told me he could be getting too much protein in his food.Do you think that is a possibility?

Well, that doesn't sound like too much and he isn't too heavy. I would take him off the puppy food and put him on an adult food. I would also rotate the protein. Taste of the Wild has about 5 different flavors, I think. Salmon, Buffalo, Fowl, Lamb, Wild Boar if I remember right. I would try those and keep rotating. Start with a protein other than what he is getting now. For now, I would try the smaller sacks so you can rotate more often. Watch his BMs. If they get better, he may have a sensitivity to Salmon or the puppy variety is too rich for him. If not, you may have to change brands and do the same rotation.

I use Taste of the Wild, but each dog is different. I use to use Wellness and my dogs had soft BMs. We're lucky these days that there are more premium brands than ever and each usually has several varieties. So if the vet is not finding anything wrong, then it could just be the brand or variety of food.

Good luck and don't give up! So many of us have experienced the same thing at one time or another. Put on your deerstalker hat and start sleuthing. Eventually you'll find the solution.

I never quite get the protein thing as i feed RAW and have no issues with dogs growth or poops. My puppy Urshie goes about twenty minutes after her meal and they are nice firm formed stools.... We also feed lovely meaty raw brisket bones that take her forever to eat, they are usually for lunch.
I do not like puppies rushing when they eat as i think they need to eat as slow as possible, so the special bowl and muffin tin sound like great ideas.
Does your puppy get anything like veggies, fruit or raw at all?
Urshie's fave past-time is now to go past the berries in the morning and I pick them for her ( it is Summer in Australia) She loves it and it has a lot of natural Vit C.

I have had so many newfies now both as fosters/rehab and my current team of six dogs. I just never seem to have loose stool issues. I think additives and preservatives and all the grains have a lot to answer for.

No that is not normal. Taste of the Wild is not really a puppy food as some varieties have too much calcium/phosphorus. Puppies generally do best on a chicken based food.

Perhaps a different food, mine dont tolerate red meats as well as chicken based dry foods and yet raw meat is never a problem for them.
