Potty training, just when I thought I was good at this.

We recently got a 12 week old female Newf and and overall we are thrilled with how well she's adjusting. However, I have been unsuccessful in house breaking her. I'm a stay at home pup parent and I take her out every hour, except from 3am-7am, and she is crated when unsupervised. She stays on the main level of the house with the family and I sleep close to her crate at night. She eats 3 meals a day and has access to fresh water from 7am-7pm. I trained 5 mastiffs in the past and as long as I was on top of it they were potty trained in 2-3 weeks. However, I never potty trained a Newf. Can any of the experienced Newf owners give me some feedback or corrections on how I can help her? Other than the house breaking challenges, she is such an awesome pup. She loves everyone she meets and listens when told leave it. leash traing is going well and she is extremely gentle with my 5 year old. Thanks so much!

At 12 weeks I would not expect a newf pup to be potty trained. In my mind I didn't say Chase was completely potty trained until she was about 8 months. Meaning I didn't trust her lose in the house unsupervised until that age.

I think you are doing everything right. Sometimes it just takes a while.

My female newfie was a challenge to train also...it took us until she was at least 6 months old before nothing in the house...My husband told me how bad I was at potty training even though I had trained many other breeds and had no problems...not sure if it is a female thing or not as my other dogs were all male...good luck but don't expect overnight success as it may take a while...

Ours have taken anything up to 9 month's to be completely dry.

I use human incontinent pads for our tribes, bbig enough, washable and reusable and if the smell lingers on them they are reliable in using them.

Decker is 5months and still has the occasional accident. He sleeps in a crate at night.
