Pork: Bad for dogs?

Ese's obdience class instructors said pork is "bad for dogs" and STRONGLY recommended we did not purchase or make training treats containing pork. Anyone know if this is legit or bogus?

Well I've read that pork is fine for dogs when it is available, as today's pork is far leaner than in the past (you should always cook it before feeding, though, because of the risk of trichinosis). But then, I've also read that pork is viewed as a questionable protein because of the risk of pollutants, diseases and indigestibility.

Personally, I just stay away from it. There are better, healthier meats such as beef, lamb, turkey, chicken and organ meats (liver, heart, kidney, spleen, gizzard) out there I'd rather feed my animals. Believe me, with all those good things to eat, they don't miss pork at all!

Thanks Kanela! I've avoided it just incase. And you're so right, there are plenty of other good-for-him meats/treats to make to worry about it much.

also a heads up, i wont feed anything pork to my guys, that is just me though, dont know if you are aware, raw pork or pork not cooked THOROUGHLY can have some type of microorganism that attacks the brain, or something like that, it was in an article, that some people in the south were having unexplained brain problems even fishermen i believe, they found it to be that microorganism, i wish i could dig up that article, kind of scary, and wonder if it is one of the predicted super bugs of the future.....

I think pork is ok ,although i choose not to use it. I like white fish ,salmon, chicken , and sometimes liver, fresh eggs shell and all, but i cant do the fresh rabit thing , just cant!

Poor bunnies! Did anyone see or read 'Watership Down'? I've never looked at rabbits the same since...

By 'fresh' do you mean alive fresh or grocery market fresh? Just wondering.

I've been meaning to read "Watership Down" for a couple of years now. I've heard it's a surprisingly wonderful and poignant book.

By fresh, I've read they're already dead but still have their fur and heads.

*shivers* I would NEVER!

Watership Down was good, but I still prefer Plague Dogs even if Adam's writing style can be somewhat difficult. Gotta love Snitter & Rowf (and Adam's for being brave enough to take a stand against scientific experimentation on dogs).
