Please, any advice!

Milo was neutered Monday last week and his wound has got slightly infected. He also got a tennis ball-size scrotal haematoma.

On Friday, he had scrotal ultrasound and was started on antibiotics (co-amoxiclav).

On Monday I insisted they at least attempt to drain the haematoma. Idiot - should have been that assertive on Friday.. By Monday, a lot of the blood already started getting fibrosed. So the tennis ball is now may be a cricket ball, not much less.

The wound is still weeping little amount of pus.

I wanted to clean the wound and to apply triple antibiotic ointment we bought in the US. He would not let me near the wound. I tried sedating him with Phenergan, adding Codeine for analgesia yesterday; both max doggy doses acc to Merck Manual for Vets online. He just about fell asleep a couple of times, but still was easily awoken. Geez, if I had taken those doses, I would have been out cold, and not just for 12 hrs.

What would you do? Other than seethe that the vets messed up a straightforward op and then had the audacity to charge me 400 pounds for extra services? I'm at my wit's end and have been regretting ever taking him to the vet.

He is SOOOOO sweet! I can't bear thinking I could lose him due to stupid complications of a basic op!:(:(

Personally l would be kicking down the door to the vets and insisting that they treat my furkid free of charge.
Did they send him home with any antibiotics at all?l know they would have given him an anti bac injection but not to send him home with something sounds unusual.

There is something called Leucillin or Horse Hypocare.its an antibacterial spray that might be easier to use.
Also cold compresses as it sounds like he is in pain.

I would be asking to speak to the practice manager about his treatment and looking for a new vet.

It will take a few days for the antibiotics to work but l would have expected at least two 8njections of steroids and antibiotics on the friday to kickstart the reaction.

How is he in himself as the body is a wonderful healer but if he shows any signs of pale gums, not wanting to eat or basically any weird symptoms l would get him back .

Routine ops can still have complications but l would have expected a quicker response.

Thank you so much, Victoria 1140 - really appreciate your suggestions!

Will try to get the spray this morning.

I've been also thinking about changing the bey practice. I think I will do some research on "good practice standards' and will try to get my 400 quid back. I was SHOCKED when they presented the bill to me on Monday! My mother had a neurosurgery in a local private hospital 6 yrs ago; they gave us a quote before she had been admitted, arranged a yearlong financing option for us and did not charge us a penny more right up to the point of her discharge from follow up 8 months later. Even though my mother also had developed a wound infection, required higher-than-expected analgesia and had more follow up visits. That is why I don't understand why I had to pay extra to the vet!!!

Also, has anyone had any success with alternatives to Elizabethan collar (eg, BiteNot, Comfy collar, ETD.

Thank you,

I have a bitenot collar and love it.

If I were you I'd be at the vet demanding my dog be taken care of. Sounds like he needs some serious antibiotics through an IV.

Some people use a rubber ring like a kids swimming aid .

There are blow up style collars but if you can a t shirt or big pair of boxer shorts helps.

£400 sounds a lot tbh.Jessie's emergency spay with complications only cost me £220 but some vets are extremely expensive.if he needs more drugs then get a prescription and vio vet are really quick and reasonably priced.

Blow up collars have been useless here. Recently purchased the Comfy Cone in XXL and so far so good.

Hope your fella improves.

How's your boy today? Like some of the others, I'd be beating down the vet's door and telling them they need to help this dog...at no additional charge. Good luck and I hope the antibiotics are kicking in.
