Well, I might regret it, but I've had it with PetSecure; as some of you may know, Thule had bi-lateral cruciate surgery in 2009. At the time, the company paid 80% of the cost, less the deductable of $100.00, for my monthly premiums of $55.00 per month. Immediately following the surgery, they lowered the percentage paid to 50% and my premiums have risen to $65.00 per month. I had Secure 3, which they paid for incidents up to $5000.00.

I may regret it, but I just don't believe it was worth it anymore, with them only paying 50%..Thule is five years old now and it's not as if we've had much in claims since, hardly anything, except for the allergy testing, which was $500.00 and they only paid $250.00....

Any thoughts... have I done the right thing cancelling the insurance, I wonder? :(

We had insurance on my Yorkie for several years. We were paying a high monthly premium and we weren't using the insurance. We took a look at what we were paying for premiums and how much we could save without paying those. We decided that we could pay for any medical needs without the insurance. Shortly after that she had to have her first surgery.

I think that only you can really decide on what is best for you and your financial situation. If something major were to happen, can you afford to pay for the medical care out of your pocket without even considering how much it is going to cost you? Would the insurance give you piece of mind that you can get the best care? Good luck with your choice. :)

Why don't you switch to another company? Sometimes younger dogs can go many years with no problems, but as they get older, issues can arise.

Hi Pammy Sue: That's exactly my way of thinking, but what gets me about it, supposing Thule did need more surgery... the most Petsecure would pay is $2500.00; so for a $1000.00 surgery, they'd pay $500. For a $10,000.00 surgery, they'd pay $2500.00! I might be gambling in the short term, but by putting the premiums away in an account ( which I've arranged to do), I hope to be able to help pay for any future needs. The insurance used to give me peace of mind, but not so much now. It never did cover yearly exams, vaccinations, or Sentinal.. so I've always been on the hook for those; it used to cover prescription diet, but they cut that out.

Good luck to me too!!!

They did that to me too Deb and I was pissed.. .. But with Murphy's issues I don't dare cancel. I am probably the exception but even at 50% they have paid out a bundle !!!! The week in intensive care alone was $6000. :(
But I see your point. Thule hasn`t had much in claims since.. Murph has.

Oh, and we have the top monthly premium but have unlimited coverage for everything.

If I'd gone with Unlimited, I would keep it too! I figure if I put the premiums into a dedicated savings, and with the backup of having an unused line of credit, I should be good. It just irks me that the most they would pay for ANYTHING is $2500, so if that had been Thule in intensive care, I'd have gotten $2500 - for the year - so if she had to go back for the same issue - NADA! Kisses to the big guy! May both our babies have good health from here on in!!:)

I did check a few other companies, I can't say any of them were much better... the one my vet is pushing now is called Trupanion.. and on the surface it seemed very good, unlimited claims, etc., then I saw that the deductable was $500.00 PER INCIDENT.

I'm just sorry I didn't go for the Unlimited claims with petsecure, in the first place:(

I picked Trupanion for Thunder but have never had to use it- so far. Chose it primarily because they were one of the few companies that would take him at the age he was when we got him and it looked reasonable, covered some genetic things if necessary.

I've had Willow insured through Embrace Pet Insurance since she was 18 weeks old. She is now 2. Cost started out at around $21.00/month for the first year. The second year is went up to $28.00/month.

This month starts the 3rd year I've had her covered and just got notice that the premium is going up 25% even though I have never made a claim. I call CS and they told me they've had so many claims for dogs this year, they raised every ones premium 25% across the board. I now pay $39.00/month for Willow's coverage.

I have a $500/year deductible and then I pay 10% - they pay 90%

Does not cover yearly exams, spay/neutering/heartworm tests/ yearly vaccinations nor does is cover any prescription medications.

It does cover what is considered things like hip dysplasia (sp) and other genetic problems - one of the only pet insurance companies that does.

I'm going to absorb this years premium and hope that it doesn't keep going up so much year after year. Although I know that insuring an older dog is going to be more expensive. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. ---sigh

My auto insurance, home insurance, life insurance, health and pet insurance all went up quite a bit this year. I see no end in sight.

I am insured through animal friends in the uk. They have been so good to us . Beau's insurance is £4000 per condition up to a maximum of £40,000. It's a lifetime cover so it's worth paying the extra money for it.

They have only put the premiums up by £2 a month since we started it and Beau has had over £8000 of treatment since we rescued him. Thoroughly reccomend them.
