People that make you want to scream at best

Got a call last Sat. from a groomer I recently started using who tells me about a couple in her building that have a dog and she was contacted because they said the dog had to leave their home today. She calls me of course. I suggested that they should contact the Chihauha rescue because apparently, according to the groomer, this poor dog has had 3 homes already and he's only a year old. I didn't want to take him in to have him then go to rescue, then a foster home, then a new home. I did say that in a crunch I would take him out of his home. It turned out that the crisis was over when the groomer contacted them.

Fast forward to today. I got a message on my voicemail from the groomer telling me that this same dog has to leave today who he will be hurt. I don't even want to speculate on what the "will be hurt meant". I told her to tell the owner I would come immediately to get the dog. She called the owner and within minutes the owner called me. She asked if I could take him and I said I would be there in 15 minutes and she thanked me.

Apparently with the Chihauha rescue there is a process (as I'm sure there is with most rescues) and the owners didn't want to go through it. This poor dog weighs 2lbs. and should weigh at least 4 or 5 (he's a Teacup). He's skin and bones and I almost cried when I saw him. What is with people? They are his second home. The husband bought the dog from the wife's hairdresser (who incidently got him on-line, probably Kijiji) because his wife is dying of cancer and I guess he thought this would be a good idea.

So his name is Gershwin (I love Gershwin) and he's here with me. He's so thin yet he's a little toughy. All he wants is to be held and loved. I should mention that when I got the call last week I had a feeling that I would get a second call and so I tried to line up a home for him. I have a client who has a 6lb. Yorkie and she would be the perfect home for this little guy. She is retired, financially set and is the nicest lady you would ever want to meet. Her Yorkie is my favourite client of all of them. He is the sweetest dog and loves people. A reflection of his owner for sure. Unfortunately she is out of town right now as she goes up north to her condo on weekends but I did leave her a message.

I would also like to add that in the last few years I have met some really amazing people in my business (as well as my NN family) and I called a client who's cats I look after when they go to their cottage (the husband is also my cardiologist) and the wife told me not to get food for the dog as she has 6 cans of Wellness. The owners were feeding this dog Kibbles and Bits (I want to scream). I bought a few cans of Merrick to start him on. As well I had to walk a client's dog later this afternoon and I told her the story as well. When I got back to her house with her dog she had all these expensive treats for my dogs and gave me $60 towards the cats and dogs. I didn't want to take the money but she insisted that I do and that I use it for all the animals here.

There are some really amazing people out there that have just come into my life and I am so thankful for them and for you guys who have always been there for me.

As for the little guy who is now here, if my client doesn't take him, I will keep him as he has had 2 homes already in his short life and the thought of him being tossed around a few more times is more than I can bear.

Thanks for letting me vent. By the way Gershwin is sitting in my lap right now and all he wants is loving.

That poor baby! My God, how could a person not feed a dog or threaten to hurt it? And a tiny chihuaha at that!
At least the poor thing is on his way to a better life now thanks to you!

Poor little Gershwin (great name btw) - what's wrong with those people????? Did they give you any idea what set them off like that?

Bless you for taking him in and taking care of him.

Thanks guys. I don't know what set these people off. The husband asked if I wanted to know why when I got there and I said no. I dndn't want to hear their story as I was afraid that I would not appear too compassionate to their situation (caring more for this poor pathetic looking dog). I don't have a digital but I will borrow one just so that I could post. Though he's not as bad as Hope he is still so very thin that my heart is just breaking.

Yes I'm hoping my client will take him so that he goes to a home with another small dog. He was fine with my Bria though. She's such an amazing momma my Bria. I had Gershwin in my yard with only Bria and he wasn't afraid of her at all. Very little dogs tend to shake a lot especially ones that have never been socialized with other dogs.

I had him upstairs originally when I brought him home and a few of my cats came to see him. He did remarkably well with them (they are all much larger than he is). He is now on my lap and my dogs are all around as well as 2 boards that are here and he's shaking a little but doing okay. I just wish he would eat which he hasn't. I put some Merrick canned down for him upstairs and sat with him but he doesn't appear to know what food is. Poor baby.

I promise to get pics of this poor soul.

Gershwin is lucky to have you! I would love to see some photos of the little guy
I agree, I would love to see pictures of this poor little soul.
I'm so happy you have him, atleast now he will be loved, safe and have a full belly. I just don't understand people, if you don't want your dog, cat whatever it is, why do alot of them not feed them. It makes me sick.
Keep us updated!

Christy

I read your post above, when Hope was picked up she wouldn't eat at first either. It took a little bit of time for her to feel safe and ok for her to eat. She was hand fed. Now you should see her eat!!!! Which makes me very happy.

Is he refusing to eat, has he been starved, or does he have something wrong with him (worms or illness) that's causing him to be so thin?

I've been dealing with Lucy's "non-eating" for a couple of months, and she is downright skinny right now (lost from 123 to 110 in the past month). She has serious health concerns that caused her to lose her appetite.

If I were you, I'd take the little guy to a vet for a thorough "go-over" just to be sure he's healthy.

BTW....thank you for being such a caring person, and taking Gershwin in.

I also don't understand Christy. It just baffles me what people do. If you saw him you would cry I swear. I got a Maltese from a Rescue in 2001 who was so thin his haunches were sunk in. This dog makes him look fat. I am familiar with very small and large breeds as I got a Saint 6 weeks after I got my Maltese. The owners said that he just doesn't eat and I'm wondering why. I shall take him to a vet a have him checked as the previous owners didn't even have a fecal sample done to see if he has worms. I swear the more I see in the human world the less I like it.

No Laurel I think he was just not fed. Although I will take him to the vet he just appears not to have been fed. I gather the first owner didn't feed him all that well as the owner's I got him from only had him for 2 months. Not nearly long enough for him to look like this. He doesn't seem to know what food is. I had the same thing with my Maltese and I managed to fattened him up though it took a long time to get him on proper food and eating without having the runs. Gershwin's poos are normal so I think he just needs some fattening up.

good Lord, it really makes you despise people. Like how much would that little guy set someone back for some food...he's so teenie tiny. you'd figure even table scraps, but that would be humane, so we can't have that...
He knows you saved him. I bet you are giving him more attention than he has ever seen.... he's a lucky boy right now! We send him lots of hugs!

Thank you Susan for saving little Gershwin! People just amaze me, from the downright nasty who abuse animals, neglect them etc. to those, like you and those here on NN, who care so much! Such extremes and the poor innocent animals are the ones who suffer with the bad people. I still haven't found out my Leo's whole story yet but I'm trying. My Dad said we should call him Lotto, since he just won it by coming here! He knows what a nut I am for my dogs!

Please give the little guy a hug from me!

Good for you for helping Gerswin hopefully into an easier/happier life. At least he won't eat you out of house and home.

Top of the morning to all of you. Sunday morning update. Firstly thank you for the well wishes and for the offers (we'll be okay though). Gershwin slept curled up in me the whole night. I've been sleeping on my livingroom couch and blocking the bottom of the stairs as I also have a mother cat with newborn kittens in my bathroom (which is the only room here that has a door). I have my 3 dogs and 2 boards who all slept with us in the livingroom (some on the couch as well).

This morning I sat on the floor in the spare room and put some dry food on the floor beside me. This little bugger would run over and take a piece and run into his crate and eat it. He ate really well. I was amazed as how much he ate. I combined the gross Kibbles and Bits with Orijen 6 Fish. At first he would take his food but then realized that the Orijen taste better so he would grab those pieces. Watching him eat is too funny. Also yesterday when I got back from doing that one walk he was in his crate with one of my cats who had found his way in as well. They were laying together.

The groomer who contacted me has a digital camera and offered to come over today to take pics of him that we may need to post on various rescue sites if that's how it ends up. I would love to keep him if my client doesn't take him but I'm not so sure this home would be fair to him with dogs in and out of here and with my two Newfs although my Newfs are fab with small dogs. They are used to 1/2lb kittens here so little isn't a problem for them but I worry about Gershwin.

I'll keep you posted and hopefully when I get pics someone can post them for me. I'm so useless in that department but great with rescues.

Little Gershwin is really eating up a storm. Who said he wasn't going to eat me out of house and home? I beg to differ. It dawned on me that he was not fed rather than he may be sick. I've so often seen on Pound Patrol and Animal Cops dogs that were not fed and how they eat when a bowl of food is put in front of them (they all but devour the bowl) and that's how Gershwin is eating. Poor little boy was hungry. I'm being very careful not to overdo it (as much as I want to) so I'm just putting very small amounts of dry food out (only Orijen now) every few hours so that he doesn't over eat. He peed and pood in my yard (bravo to the litttle one) and I'm so in love with him you have no idea. Not even 24 hours and I'm in love (aren't I the hopeless one). Those of you who do this know what I'm talking about how each of them take a piece of your heart.

My mission was to save a dog that was possibly in danger and now look what's happened I've gone and fallen for him. Okay it could be a lot worse.
