Ok folks....the time is at hand. The Leavenworth GTG is the last week of this month. We have put together quite the raffle to raise funds for the INDR ( Idaho Newfoundland Dog Rescue ) and the Washington NCA rescue. I'll start another thread to post the items being offered.

" .... Thousands of firefighters are battling dozens of wildfires that were sparked by lightning earlier this month up and down the east slopes of the Cascades. Some of the blazes are small and in remote areas, but hundreds of residents have been evacuated or warned to be ready to flee near the large fire complexes. .... Overall, fires were burning across some 88 square miles of dry forest, brush and grass in a part of the state that hasn’t seen significant rainfall in weeks. .... "

Road closures, campground closures, school closures, evacuations, low % contained and spreading fast.

10-28-2011 " .... is it on the east side of the Cascades?

We just scouted out a scooterjoring trail just about that distance from the east side of Mt Hood -- the old Barlow Road Trail -- and it was dry dry dry and dead, so many dying and dead trees, really tragic. Extreme fire danger.

My concern is heat and dryness and dust in summer. Just could not believe the difference as we wound around 35 -- like another planet. In October!

I vowed we would not set foot on the east side of the Cascades unless it was covered in snow. I don't think it would even be safe under snow on the Old Barlow Trail -- too many tall dead trees about to collapse.

I would LOVE to go to any PacNW get-together, just am very careful about the environment it's in. Need shade and coolness for Orka. .... "

Over 15 months ago I raised my concerns here and on Facebook about July - Aug - Sept - Oct east of the Cascades. The reason is I have been monitoring the weather, water and ground conditions for the last 14 years intensely. Heat, dryness, lack of rain and dying trees / bushes have grown worse every single year, to the point where it is unsafe to plan to be east of the Cascades in these months.

There are several reasons for this, which I won't go into here, but are well documented elsewhere. Suffice it to simply say it is the truth, and tragic. My life ruled by the weather, and I spend most of my time in rivers or forests, and have been monitoring the changes with absolute horror.

Again, I would love to go to a PacNW Newf Get-Together west of the Cascades, before the end of June. Sometimes the unusual dryness starts in April and May can be hot. So mid-late April would be the safest time to meet, and the greenest wettest place would be in Washington State. Yes we might need jackets and wet / drysuits for water training in lakes / rivers / ocean, but it's beautiful with flowers and safe, and still cool enough for the Newfs to be happy and walk, swim, draft, train etc :)

I'm FEMA CERT NET certified and aware of safety and changing conditions. All for lots of fun and getting together and celebrating Newfdom!

It's up to each person to observe and be aware. I did try to warn Newf ppl because I care about the Newf community, and I did message Teri and give her links to incident reports and satellite pix. One can only do so much with love, and then let the chips fall. The info is out there for anybody who wants to study. I look at real time satellite pix several times every day.

Not only are wildfires extremely fast moving, unpredictable and extraordinarily destructive, but the smoke is a health hazard. And extreme dryness and heat is not good for Newfoundland dogs.

Chunks of flying, burning bark cause new evacuations in Washington wildfires

Crews on Thursday were battling a fire that forced dozens of eastern Washington residents to flee overnight with their valuables -- and some even with livestock in trailers. The evacuations add to the hundreds of people who earlier evacuated across the region due to fires raging over the last few weeks.

The new evacuations, this time in the Mission Ridge area near Wenatchee, came as eight-inch chunks of burning bark were reported to have fallen in Mission Ridge. Those chunks were coming from an explosive fire inside the Table Mountain Complex some six miles away, a fire incident spokesman said.
"There are indicators of extreme fire behavior and residents of these areas are strongly advised to leave the closure area as soon as possible
," the incident team said in a statement.

The Table Mountain Fire Complex is actually four fires that have so far burned 9,500 acres within the Wenatchee National Forest. The fires, and dozens of others in eastern Washington, were started by lightning earlier this month.
A second Table Mountain fire on Wednesday caused the closure of Highway 97 for much of the day.

The complex of fires was just 4 percent contained on Thursday morning.
In Liberty, a town of several dozen that's just two miles from one of the Table Mountain fires, some residents were preparing to leave if an evacuation order is issued.

"This time we're watching it pretty close, real close," Larry Smith told NBC affiliate KING5.com as he and his wife packed up.

But Paul Heit told KING5.com that he wasn't packing just yet.
"If I see flames coming over the hill and it's coming 80 miles per hour," he said, "yeah, I'll probably leave."

Some 5,000 firefighters are battling the eastern Washington fires, the largest of which is the Wenatchee Complex at nearly 40,000 acres. Nearly 2,000 firefighters have been deployed there but that complex of fires is just 12 percent contained.

The fires have created bad air quality for residents, especially in Cashmere, where the school district suspended classes for the week as a result.
Heavy dust has also covered parts of the region. Some locals have even said the conditions are worse than when the Mount St. Helens volcano blew in 1980, sending ash across the state.

Angela, it's been smokey here for about 3 weeks now. I have a sort of equivalent of LarPar and it's been difficult to breathe. Triggers a kind of asthma reaction. So I can see, feel, smell it here, just south of Portland, Oregon. It's coming down the Columbia River Gorge and the I-5 corridor.

Praying for all. Wanted to give the Newf community a Heads Up! so nobody goes anywhere near the area. Extremely dangerous!

I would love to see this great get-together, that Teri has worked so hard on, still happen, simply at another location, west of the Cascades and as close to the ocean as possible to have necessary moisture at this time of year.

Lynn got off Sept 21 - Oct 2 for vacation for this -- we really want to go -- but knew east of the Cascades would erupt in flames by September. Actually thought the fires could hit by July.

" .... Huge wildfires are burning a mere 75 miles from Seattle ....

Wenatchee, Ellensburg, Leavenworth and several other eastern Washington cities are socked in with smoke from raging wildfires in the lee of the Cascades. Air quality has been ranked as hazardous in Wenatchee for the last 7 days.

After a month of dry, hot weather the fires were sparked by lightning September 9th . Lightning strikes caused about 100 individual fires and strong wind led to the rapidly expanding burn zones to be labeled the Wenatchee Complex. The complex includes over 50 lightning caused fires in Chelan county. These fires have been growing and consuming for the last 10 days.

The tally of burned and demolished homes, farms and wild land continues today. Fire is a way of nature regenerating itself but we have so many of our firefighters trying to contain it that the concern has become much larger, not to mention the health hazard the smoke has created for residents and firefighters. .... There was no notice on Newf Net that the Get Together had been cancelled, and there are folks here not on Facebook.

Why would you want this really important lifesaving information to stop? How odd. Especially with huge furry Newfs who don't like heat and extreme dryness, it's vital to know environment conditions and be alerted to danger.

Fire is an extreme hazard, something to be on top of with awareness.

Lynn just scheduled Sept 27 + 28 (+29 +30) off so we can have fun with y'all. Lovely lake, looking forward to water rescue training with other Newfies.

Spent a couple hours googling ooooogling hotels, B&Bs, lodges, cabins, campgrounds, etc, emailed a retreat that looks optimal, looking for simple lodging with lots of acreage to get Orka's zoomies out before joining daily. Retreat has 530 acres :)

We'll bring 2 kayaks. Can't fit the cart or wagon in the Jeep with the gear; too bad because parading during Ocktoberfest could be a hoot.

Will bring 2 sets of joring gear so any of you can try it.

Any of you are welcome to try our Newf kayak -- the platform is big enough for a giant Newf. (photo credit Leah Nash)

Apparently, Back in December....you were quite excited to come. Hmmmmm :whistling:
