Old unspayed females

Do old unspayed females continue to go into season? Or do they go through a form of menapause
Today Nicholas jumped the front fence to visit an 11 yr old unspayed ****zu type female  I didn't think he could jump over a rock and a 4' fence with a steep drop on the other side, but he did and lived to follow the female and it's owner down their driveway opposite my house

I don't know what you are calling 'old' , but females come into estrace even after they stop producing eggs..The ode de Estrace may be there. (I would say 11 is QUITE old.).OR..Nicholas may be a youngster just experiencing his hormones...not knowing what exactly he is doing....<G> Julie

We have a 6 year old that just came out of heat. Not sure when she will quit it though. Heard of pups at 8 yrs from others. In reference to the 4 foot fence, we have a 12 month fem that clears a 5 footer for no apparent reason.

Angela.......it is funny you should ask about this. I was just wondering the same thing a few days ago!
One of my older (about 35 years) Newf books says they can be bred up to 9 years old!

It is difficult for a newfie girl to get pregnant after 5 and I am not sure I would want to put an older bitch through that even if they could. I am going through this scenerio now, and Rory will be 5 next month. I would say your older newf book, Jennifer, is a little outdated with that statement on breeding a 9 yr old!

One of the long time breeders I was talking with when I was looking for puppy said she stops breeding a bitch at 6 yo.

i also heard average is 6 or 7 years and it is dependant on how fit they are.
if a 7 year old is built like a mac truck and very physically fit.
than they will have a last litter.
i would not push my girls to have more than two or three litters, three max
it is very demanding on them.

Lynn, It's the white book from 1971! This is the Newfoundland by Kitty Drury. It was the official publication of the NCA. There are alot of things in there that are way outdated but great info! I couldn't believe they used to breed them that long either!

That is amazing, Jennifer! I wonder what the vets had to say back then too since I know mine would not recommend breeding a 9 yr old girl now.
