Old Dog Stories

As most of you know, my Echo is 12 - 1/2 and suffering from numerous ailments including 3 kinds of cataracts and two blown knees - one that was operated on and never healed well and the other which we left to heal on its one and actually did better. We have been walking her with a sling for 3 years now, and I have written about her frequently. Well, today is another story. She can't bark any more. It's more of a squeak, but she uses it quite effectively, because she knows she can get away with it - no barking allowed in the house. She squeaks when she wants to get a drink, when she's hungry, when she needs to go out, and lately when she wants us to come back into the kitchen where her bed is and keep her company/entertained. This morning after all the usual morning goings on, I went up to take a shower, DH was indisposed, and the other three dogs were somewhere in the house. DH yells to me to see what Echo is squeaking about. I put on a robe and go downstairs to the kitchen. She's there by herself. I check and she doesn't want to get up. I decide that she wants attention, so I talk, pet, scratch, etc. and leave. Squeak, squeak, squeak. What is it? Moonlight (our other newf) walks in, gives her a sniff, a lick, and lays down beside her on the floor. They both flop over and are sound asleep in two minutes. She wanted Moonlight, not mommy.
