OFA questions.

Hoping for some advice from the experts on some OFA questions I have.
First, I am wondering when most of you do your hips and elbows. I always thought that age 2 was the best time for it, but have recently heard that some people wait until the dog is older.
Second, what is your vets choice for the procedure. My vet prefers chemical restraint, but after calling around to a few other vets I was given a mix, some prefer anesthesia.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Probably the best vet in the U.S. known for taking excellent x-rays is Dr. Lonnie Davis in Troy Ohio. Troy Animal Hospital. He does not sedate and he is VERY good with the dogs. Just mapquested it and you are about 3 1/2 hours away.

I've been told to get it as soon as the dog turns 2. If you wait and the dog gets an injury you may not get an correct evaluation.

Age 2 is recommended since the growth plates close around 18 mo. There really is no reason to wait longer than 2 yrs of age unless they are waiting after a heat cycle. Vets have different methods as to whether they do anesthesia or not. You have to find one that will work best for you

Thank you for the information Jeannie and Lynn.
I just had Leroy done last week, but still need to do Sherman and wanted to make sure their wasn't preference on restraint or age.

Hi,

Some people also use OVC, the Canadian equivalent to OFA, with the exception that OVC will certify at 18 months old.

My Vet never uses anesthesia when doing my hips and elbows and I prefer it that way...:)
