Nutri-Source Pro-Vita Salmon

Hello All, does anyone use Nutri-Source Pro-Vita Grain Free Salmon for their pooches? I was contemplating switching Elwood from Holistic Select Lamb and Rice to something like Acana, but we're sitting a neighbor's pup who eats the Pro-Vita and I figured I'd try it to see if he tolerates it. Note - the Goofy Newf we're watching is doing well on it, but seems to be the king of hot spots. Thanks! Michelle

I'm not surprised that the Goofy Newf you're watching has hot spots. The Nutri-Source Salmon kibble is low in omega-3 and way too high in omega-6.

Also in the ingredient list they indicate that the salmon meal is a source of oil which is not true. The first ingredient, salmon, would be the source but because of the technicalities of listing ingredients, this is a very limited source. The added oil is sunflower oil which would not provide usable omega-3 for a canine. Flax seed is on the list of ingredients and while it would provide some omega-3 for their stats, again such vegetable sources are not assimilated.

You would also want to make sure that the salmon meal has a licence from the US Coast Guard to ship without ethoxyquin as the preservative. Since there is no mention of this on the website, you would have to ask the company for the info.

While Acana Pacifica is far from perfect, it does have a significantly higher level of omega-3 and all from fish; the added oil is herring oil rather than a vegetable oil.

WOW Peter!!!! THANKS for the info! I'll not switch to it and will mention it to them upon their return. Grantedlast time we watched him I told them he could use a diet so they're gonna think I'm a nosy busybody. Which, in reality, I guess I am. He is INCREDIBLY well loved and COMPLETELY taken care of, but he's got ortho issues (he makes Elwood, aka Captain Elbow Displaysia look healthy) and cannot exercise much. I just want to help them keep him healthy.

I am currently switching my 8 month old Newfie to NutriSource SeaFood select, I did lots of research on the matter and ended up with a headache. But since my puppy seems to be sensitive to protein (it causes her soft stool) I went for NutriSource which came highly recommended by a life long Newfie owner. Is ther any supplements I can give my puppy to make up for what the food lacks? The vets around here are clueless.

You could add sockeye salmon oil. Here is a link:
