not sure what's wrong with Buckley

After two vet visits, it remains unclear what is causing Buckley's lethargy and diminished appetite.

It started with Tuesday's dinner, which he ate all of, but not with the usual 90-second gusto. He'd had a somewhat loose stool on our afternoon walk, but that happens occasionally.

On Wed morning, he only picked at his breakfast. I took him to the vet at noon ... temp normal, heart normal, CBC bloodwork normal. They gave him a shot of Cerenia and sent us home with Metronidazole 500mg. He only picked at dinner, but did swallow his pill.

Thursday morning, same deal, ate part of breakfast. Same with dinner. I dropped off a stool sample last night, which was negative for giardia (sp?).

From Wednesday morning on, he just wasn't his usual self ... no counter surfing, sink diving, or any of the usual antics. He did poop late yesterday afternoon, which suggested to me that there was no intestinal blockage, and he perked up a bit last night, but still wasn't himself.

This morning, he was fed a mix of rice, cottage cheese, and cooked chop meat, but didn't really eat much. Then, I noticed he seemed weak in the rear. I tried to get him to jump up onto me for a treat (we normally don't encourage jumping), and he couldn't get up.

Back to the vet at noon. The vet (different doc at same practice who's seen him once before) checked his rear feet, legs, and hips. No apparent problems. Then, a Snap 4 Dx test ... negative for Lyme, heartworm and two other things (which I couldn't spell even if I remembered them!).

There was a discussion on NN late last year about Purina changing the Pro Plan Chicken and Rice Adult to "shredded blend". I stockpiled a couple of bags of the old formula, then transitioned to the shredded blend. He seemed to tolerate the switch without difficulty.

Speaking with my breeder this morning, I was advised to stop the shredded blend and switch to the Pro Plan Salmon for sensitive skin and stomach. I went to the store to buy it and noticed that what appears to be the original chicken and rice adult formula is now called "weight mangagement". (Anyone else notice this?) I bought small bags of both and will try these and see what happens.

The vet gave me Fortiflora for him to take with food, which is supposed to enhance good digestive bacteria and work against bad bacteria. And he's to continue the Metronizadole.

I'm operating under the assumption that nothing dire is going on here, but I'm still bummed out and worried.

Just a suggestion. I have no idea if this could be a cause or not, but my neighbor recently described your exact situation with her dog. Snap was negative, her dog came home, but got progressively worse, she went back to the vet, sent out a C6 test which came back positive for lymes. The snap they did in the office was a false negative. Just something to keep in mind.
I really hope the change in food is all that is bothering baby Buckley.

If he were mine I'd let his system rest (no food) for 24 hours then feed him a bland diet of hamburger or boiled chicken, rice and cottage cheese for a few days to see if that settles his stomach. The slowly switch to one of the other kibbles.

Ardeagold recently posted about the same problem with the snap.

Does he have a temp?

Jeannie, I think that's probably the way to go at this point, thanks.

Thanks, Ginny. I checked the post by Andrea. Yikes! ... I'll see about further testing.

His temp was normal on both visits.

Same thing just happened to me...with Chance.

Negative SNAP 4Dx on Lyme, but the Vet sent out for a complete tick serology (not just a C6) and he came back high positive for Lyme and high positive for Rocky Mtn Spotted Fever (which is NOT part of the SNAP test).

If this continues...get the full tick serology sent OUT.

Also...have them check for any type of back/neck injury. Xrays perhaps, of the spine.

Hope you find some answers, Tom. Sending good thoughts to Buckley. It does sound more like something like lyme disease than diet though.

Thanks, everyone ... I'm going to stay with him downstairs tonight and we'll see how he seems in the morning.

I'm leaning toward going back to the vet first thing tomorrow (today!) for abdominal and spinal x-rays. Am I overreacting? Does it make more sense to wait until Sunday night to see how he's doing, then go first thing Monday if his condition doesn't show signs of improvement?

Sleepless on Staten Island! ...

If he's no better by tomorrow, I'd go back. Xrays aren't a bad idea. And manipulation of the joints...and did they take his temp? Blood tests (CBC)? Does he ever eat anything he shouldn't...socks, rocks, anything? Is he on any kind of pain meds? Aspirin? Rimadyl, Deramaxx, Metacam, Zubrin? If so, that could be the problem.

And if they can't find something while you're there..get the tick serology done. Our Vet put Chance on Amoxi (500 mgs 3x a day) until he got the results back (about 4 days). Now he's on Doxy for 6 weeks. Of course, Chance did have a temp of 104 F so the Vet suspected an "infection" of some sort.

This has been going on since Tuesday. That's long enough! Tell them to keep at it until they find out what's wrong!

I always say "better safe, than sorry". I'd take him back today, and ask for the serology test, and possibly x-rays.

Has he had x-rays of his hips/spine before that you can use as a baseline, to detect any changes?
